소영모(이미영)는 포상금이 일억이 넘을 거라는 말을 듣자 가슴이 뛰기 시작한다. 성식(성지루)은 표정관리를 하라고 주의를 준다.어성리마을을 수색하던 김대위 일행은 한숙의 집으로 숨은 공비들을 발견한다. 총소리가 들리자 개울가에 나와 놀던 주호(송일국)와 소영(장진영)은 깜짝 놀란다.교전중 한숙은 공비들의 총에 맞아 숨지고 김대위는 공비들을 추격한다. 공비를 생포한 김대위는 차마 총을 쏘지 못하다 뒤편에서 나타난 박소좌에게 붙잡힌다.자수를 권유하던 김대위 앞에 이대위(허준호)가 나타나 박소좌와 대치하는 상황이 벌어진다. 총을 버리라고 소리치던 이대위는 박소좌를 향해 사격을 하고 김대위는 쓰러지는 박소좌의 총을 맞고 사망한다.창고안에서 사고현장을 목격한 소영은 소스라치게 놀란다. 졸지에 고아가 된 주호는 고모가 살고 있는 필라델피아로 떠나며 소영에게 펜던트를 건넨다.많은 포상금을 받게된 성식은 주변의 따가운 시선을 견디지 못하고 미국으로 이민을 가려고 마음먹는데...

So-Yeong's mother (Lee Mi-Yeong) hears the money will be over 1 eok won (~ 100K USD) and her heart starts to jump, but Seong-Shik (Seong Ji-Ru) tells her to be more discreet in her expression . Lieutenant Kim searches through Eo-Seong-Ri village and discovers communists hiding in Han-Suk's home. Upon hearing the sound of gunshot, Ju-Ho (Song Il-Guk) and So-Yeong (Jang Jin-Yeong), who are playing by the brook, become startled. During the hostilities, Han-Suk is shot and dies, while Lieutenant Kim pursuits the guerilla. Lieutenant Kim captures a guerilla but when unable to use his gun he is caught by Private Park who comes from behind. Lieutenant Kim tries to persuade their surrender, but just then Lieutenant Lee (Hur Jun-Ho) appears and falls into a confrontation with Private Park. Lieutenant Lee yells for the drop of guns as he fires toward Private Park, and Lieutenant Kim gets shot by Private Park as he falls, and Lieutenant Kim dies. So-Yeong who witnesses the incident in the warehouse is deeply frightened. Ju-Ho who is suddenly orphaned is about to leave for Philadelphia where his aunt lives, and gives So-Yeong a pendant as he leaves. Seong-Shik who receives a large sum of reward money cannot withstand the watchful eyes around him and is determined to emigrate to America.
