Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - July Week 4
After two weeks of dominance by 2PM‘s “Hands Up“, girl power returns this week as six of the top seven songs are by female groups or artists. Songwriters Shin Sa Dong Tiger and Choi Gyu Sung must be very happy as the duo composed and wrote both the No. 1 and the No. 2 songs. T-Ara‘s “Roly Poly” edged out Hyuna‘s “Bubble Pop” by 15 points to win the top spot. “Roly Poly” wasn’t a knockout choice among TV Stations and its only win so far is on MNet’s M!Countdown. But this song tops most airplay and internet rankings. “Bubble Pop” is in about the same boat and not far behind in score. It may overtake “Roly Poly” next week.
We predicted last week 2NE1‘s “I’m The Best” has the best shot of becoming the new No. 1 song, but instead it fell a spot to No. 4 this week. However help is on the way – this song is currently a digital single, but 2NE1’s latest mini-album will be released next week including this song. When the album sales score is added, this song may rebound again.
There are two new songs in the top 10 this week. Rising female group Girl’s Day is back in the top 10 with “Hug Me Just Once“. Girl’s Day who broke through with “Twinkle Twinkle”, one of the most popular songs in the first half this year, returns with their first mini-album and continues to solidify their status in the much competitive female groups division. “Hug Me Just Once” is a refreshing number perfect for the summer as shown through its use of synths and bokgo melodies. The song’s addictive lyrics are expected to be sung by listeners.
A song with a good potential to break the female dominance is MBLAQ‘s newest hit “Mona Lisa” which debuts at No. 9 this week. This song is from their third mini-album of the same title. It is an electronic dance number with Spanish sounds. The song is about the difficulties in getting a certain girl, thus giving her a mysterious vibe like the famous Mona Lisa. It’s already in the top 10 the first week and is expected to make a big move next week.

Comment: We are going way back 20 years ago for our “Yesterday Once More” segment this week. Susie Kang is a Korean American debuted in 1990 at the age of 23. She was one of the top female idol singers back then, in an era where Korean pop music was largely unknown to international fans. She is famous for her ballads. “Scattered Days” was from her second album in 1991. This song was remade by Park Hyo Shin in 2005 on his remake album “Neo Classicism” and became a hit song once again.
