Gong Seung Yeon Explains Why She Doesn't Regret Giving Up Her Girl Group Dream
On June 30, actress Gong Seung Yeon sat down for an interview following the finale of her tvN drama “Circle.”
Gong Seung Yeon, whose sister Jungyeon is a member of TWICE, trained at SM Entertainment before switching agencies in 2012 to focus on acting. She debuted in the tvN drama “I Love Lee Tae Ri” and made her name through dramas such as “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Six Flying Dragons,” “Master: God of Noodles,” and “Introvert Boss.” She also gained popularity as a virtual couple with CNBLUE’s Lee Jong Hyun on the variety show “We Got Married.”
In “Circle” she took on a new challenge with a mysterious role in a science fiction-oriented drama. When asked if she had any regrets about giving up her idol dreams, she said, “Absolutely none. I did train to be an idol for a long time. While I was training to be in a girl group, I auditioned for acting parts and didn’t get anything so I thought acting wasn’t the road for me either. I used to think I couldn’t do anything. But now I’m happy to see myself acting. I used to want to stand on stage but now I don’t want to sing or dance at all.”
She added, “I didn’t have a lot of talent [as a trainee]. I couldn’t dance or sing. As a trainee, it was hard to overcome those obstacles. I was doing it because I had a dream, but it wasn’t going very well so it was hard. When I received acting training, my mind was most at peace. When I was going through vocal and dance training, I’d be stressed, and I realized that acting made me most comfortable. I’ll never forget my first experience on set of ‘I Love Lee Tae Ri.’ I was standing on set and watching the staff move busily around. I felt goosebumps come over me.”
“Circle” told the story of a college student (Yeo Jin Goo) in 2017 and a detective (Kim Kang Woo) in the futuristic world of 2037 and the mystery that bound them together. The drama wrapped up on June 27.
