“The Unit” Responds To Criticism Of Similarities With “Produce 101"
The chief producer of upcoming KBS idol rebooting show “The Unit” has responded to criticisms about its similarity to the show “Produce 101.”
On October 25, the production team and celebrity mentors of “The Unit” held a press conference ahead of the show’s premiere this weekend.
Chief producer Han Kyung Chun said during the conference, “‘The Unit’ is a story about youth and dreams. Rather than saying that KBS will be making dreams come true, we will be an assistant that will help them achieve their dreams.”
When asked about accusations in regard to similarities between “The Unit” and the popular show “Produce 101,” he said, “There’s a duty to reflect current trends, and while we were planning, it was not easy to search for very original things.”
“I acknowledge that there were some parts that were limited,” he added. “We met with more than 90 agencies, but there were no large agencies. We ask for your understanding in consideration of the fact that we are giving an opportunity to small and middle-sized agencies.”
“The Unit” is a new survival show on KBS that features idols who already have debut experience, with viewers voting for which contestants they want to see in the final female and male groups. It will premiere on October 28 at 9:15 p.m. KST.
