WINNER's Song Mino Talks About Gaining Popularity Through Variety Shows
On April 4, WINNER sat down for an interview to promote their second album “EVERYD4Y.” While WINNER members promote as a group, members have also had individual activity opportunities. Kang Seung Yoon appeared in tvN’s “Prison Playbook,” and Kim Jin Woo participated in JTBC prison variety show “Do the Right Thing.”
Song Mino has been especially active and well-loved in variety shows, particularly in “New Journey to the West 4.” With his famous “Song finger” incident, he was responsible for creating the spin-offs including the WINNER version of “Youth Over Flowers” as well as “Kang’s Kitchen,” both of which were popular in their own way.
On creating the spin-offs, he laughed shared, “I unknowingly had an active role. Things like editing were well done, so I ended up receiving a lot of love. I didn’t know my finger had that kind of ability. I’m excited to see what my finger will do next time.” Song Mino also talked about his increased popularity after the “Song finger” incident. He commented, “After coming out on variety shows, even when I went to my neighborhood supermarket, people would talk about the finger incident. It was the first time I felt such interest in me due to a variety show. I thought, ‘the power [of my finger] is amazing,’ and felt that I need to take good care of my finger. I think it’s also a good direction to have a more friendly image within YG. I want to communicate through more promotions.”
Song Mino then talked about the physical difficulties of filming the popular “New Journey to the West” spin-off, “Kang’s Kitchen.” He mused whether he would do it again, but then decided that he would, joking that it was probably easier than prison life. He shared, “Even though it was for broadcast, we really ran a restaurant. We actually received payments from customers, so it 100 percent felt like we were running a restaurant. We didn’t have even five minutes to rest, so it was the most physically tiring thing since my debut. Even when I was a trainee, I rested during breaks. So during the show, I felt the importance of breaks.”
He laughed and commented, “Afterwards, no matter what restaurant I go to, I don’t complain at all. I understood the importance of restaurants. I feel like I really understand their hard work.”
On whether there would be a fifth season of “New Journey to the West,” Song Mino answered, “There hasn’t been any information yet. We just unexpectedly go when producer Na Young Suk and the writers call us. Normally the production staff doesn’t tell us anything. Since Kyuhyun went to the army, I don’t know who else will come.”
WINNER recently released their second album “EVERYD4Y,” and are currently promoting with their title track “Everyday.”
