Veteran Singer Cho Yong Pil Talks About His Perspective On Popular Idols
On April 11, veteran artist Cho Yong Pil held a press conference for his 50th anniversary since debut.
At the event, he was asked if there are junior artists that have caught his eye.
In response, he commented, “I don’t think I can just select one artist on the spot,” and added, “I think if they are famous right now, there’s definitely a reason for that. Many people like them and are enthusiastic about them because there is something there.”
When asked if he listens to EXO and BTS, he responded, “Of course. I also watch performances by EXO, BTS, and BIGBANG on YouTube.”
He continued, “If I ask myself ‘Why are they famous?’ and look more closely, they are good at singing or good-looking, or there are other definite reasons and charms.”
Cho Yong Pil joked, “While watching K-pop idols, I think that it is a relief. If I was promoting [as one of them] these days, I would not have been successful. I wouldn’t be visually good enough. Kids these days are too good-looking.”
Although he is almost 70-years-old, Cho Yong Pil’s music, such as his 2013 track “Bounce,” is well-loved by people of all ages for its trendy style. On how he keeps with the times, he shared, “I listen to music on YouTube everyday and listen to recent music a lot. As I started out as a guitarist, I write down all the chords as I am listening.”
Cho Yong Pil will be appearing on an upcoming episode of “Immortal Songs,” which airs its first episode on April 21. He will then embark on a nationwide tour titled “Thanks to You” in May.
