Korea Remembers Victims Of The Sewol Ferry Disaster On Its 4th Year Anniversary
On April 16, 2014, a passenger ferry on its way from Incheon to Jeju Island sank while carrying 476 people. 304 crew members and passengers, mostly students of Danwon High School, died from the incident.
Four years have passed since the Sewol Ferry disaster. On April 16, 2018, the first memorial ceremony organized by the Korean government was held in Gyeonggi Province near the location of Danwon High School. At the event, the prime minister Lee Nak Yeon stated, “[President] Moon Jae In’s administration will completely investigate the truth behind the Sewol Ferry disaster and take the lesson to heart to put in full effort for a safe Republic of Korea.”
Koreans and people all around the world continue to mourn and remember, and many celebrities also shared posts of remembrance.
GOT7’s Youngjae posted a cover of “You Whom I Love,” a song that was written by a student who passed away in the tragedy and was later completed by 4MEN. Youngjae performed this song at the Golden Disc Awards earlier this year.

Actress Gong Seung Yeon wrote down the lyrics to “A Thousand Winds,” a song by Lim Hyung Joo to commemorate the tragedy. Her caption reads, “Four years since Sewol. I will not forget. I heard this song on the radio a few days ago and paused for a moment.”

Actor Yoon Kyun Sang wrote, “I will not forget,” and, “The yellow ribbon is not political.”
He later edited his post and added, “I am not skilled in writing, so there are people who are misunderstanding my post.” He explained that when he posts about Sewol each year or goes in a taxi with a ribbon badge, he hears various political comments or curses. He hopes that people will view his post as simply commemorative.
Yoon Kyun Sang continued, “Also, there are so many events for our hearts to hurt over like the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong and the Air Force Crash. As a man who was discharged from active service of the Korean military, it is impossible to not mourn and for my heart to not hurt. There is no death that does not hurt. Please do not try to measure what is more important.”
