Watch: SHINee Personally Chooses Their Top 3 Ballads
The SHINee members have chosen what they think are the group’s three best ballads!
During the idols’ guest appearance on the June 9 episode of KBS’s “Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook,” host Yoo Hee Yeol mentioned that SHINee was so renowned for their dance skills that people sometimes overlooked their slower songs.
“Because SHINee’s performances are so perfect and they have a lot of spectacular choreography, there are some people who think that they’re only good at performing dance songs,” said Yoo Hee Yeol. “But SHINee’s songs also include emotional ballads, and personally, I’m a fan of those songs. They have a lot of medium-tempo ballads.”
He then asked the SHINee members to pick their own favorite SHINee ballads. Onew chose the song “Selene 6.23” as the group’s third best ballad, explaining, “It’s a song with the message: ‘I’ll hang onto this faint glimmer of hope, and though you’re too far away for me to reach, I’ll go to you.'”
Second place went to “Encore,” with Taemin commenting, “Recently, after listening carefully to the lyrics one more time, I really liked that the lyrics contained a hopeful message. I realized why fans and the people around me liked ‘Encore’ so much. These days, the song really speaks to me, and I’m listening to it a lot.”
Finally, Key chose their song “You & I,” which was released as part of SHINee’s new album “The Story of Light,” as the group’s favorite ballad. “I’m not recommending it because I wrote the lyrics,” he said jokingly, before explaining, “I ended up writing the lyrics because I liked the song so much from the very first time I heard it. I really wanted us to sing it live at least once.”
