Watch: Highlight's Son Dongwoon Says He Thought He Would Become "Radio Star" MC
Highlight’s Son Dongwoon opened up about his MC aspirations on the latest episode of “Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook“!
The August 4 broadcast of the KBS 2TV music talk show featured a “Summer Christmas” special, with Son Dongwoon appearing as one of the performers. While chatting with host Yoo Hee Yeol during the show, Son Dongwoon revealed that he had expected to become one of the four MCs of MBC’s hit variety show “Radio Star.”
The Highlight member explained that he had hoped to take over for Super Junior’s Kyuhyun when he left the show last year in order to fulfill his mandatory military service.
“When Kyuhyun temporarily left to go the military, I thought I would end up becoming the fourth MC of ‘Radio Star,'” he said. “[Kim] Gura took good care of me, and he said that I was someone whose charm was my raw, unrefined nature [as an MC].” He went on with a laugh, “But it didn’t work out in the end, so I’m still raw and uncooked.”
Yoo Hee Yeol then asked, “Weren’t you gunning for the MC position at ‘Music Bank’ for a while?” Son Dongwoon replied, “That wasn’t just for a while! I’ve been gunning for the job at ‘Music Bank’ for about seven to eight years, and I still am.”
After explaining to the audience that Son Dongwoon had hilariously photobombed the ending shot of the KBS music show so often that he now bore the nickname “ending fairy,” Yoo Hee Yeol played an entertaining montage of the Highlight member’s past appearances on the show, both as an “ending fairy” and as a special MC.
Yoo Hee Yeol then asked Son Dongwoon to send a message to the producers of “Music Bank,” to which he wittily replied, “‘Music Bank’ usually has an actor for its male MC. But I think that as the times change, we need to think outside of the box.”
Son Dongwoon went on tease the host by joking, “I asked the ‘Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook’ producers, ‘How much longer will Yoo Hee Yeol be hosting the show?'” As everyone cracked up, he continued, “I was just curious, since you’d been hosting [the show] for such a long time, and you’re so good at it. I couldn’t help but be curious.”
He added, “Just in case it was tiring for you to have to film the show every week, I thought that maybe I could rotate in as [the MC] once a month or so.”
Son Dongwoon recently made his Korean solo debut with the self-composed ballad “There’s No Eternity.”
