Eric Nam Buys Out Showing Of "Crazy Rich Asians" To Help Achieve Box Office "Gold Open" For The Film
Eric Nam and his brothers are helping the film “Crazy Rich Asians” achieve a “gold open” by buying out a showing at a theater in Atlanta!
“Crazy Rich Asians” is a new film based on Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name, and it hit theaters in the United States on August 15. It’s the first movie by a major Hollywood studio since “The Joy Luck Club” in 1993 to feature a leading cast that’s all Asian-American.
With the excitement surrounding this monumental milestone for Asian-American representation in the media (as well as the great reviews coming in for the film), many people have been purchasing tickets for others or buying whole showings at theaters to ensure the movie is a box office success. People getting involved in the “Gold Open” movement for “Crazy Rich Asians” have included some of the film’s stars, ice dancers Maia and Alex Shibutani, many fans, and more.
Korean-American singer Eric Nam took to Instagram to share that he and his brothers are taking part in the movement too! They’ve bought a showing at a theater in Atlanta, where they used to go see movies on the weekends, for 6 p.m. local time on August 16.
Eric Nam wrote, “My brothers and I have decided to buy out a showing of the new movie ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ … Why? Because we’re tired of being under and misrepresented in mainstream media and we want decision makers to understand that WE ARE HERE, WE ARE ABLE, WE ARE INFLUENTIAL AND WE ARE IMPORTANT.
“We’re not just tech geeks, math nerds, and ninja assassins. We are brilliant, beautiful, sexy, hot, and much more. The success of Crazy Rich Asians is about US. OUR community. This is about directly impacting our future and futures of generations to come. To be the first full Asian cast movie in 25 years is absolutely INSANE.
“SO! Let’s pull together as a community and SHOW UP. The Nam brothers hope that we’ve made it just a little bit easier for you all to do so and to join in. And no, you don’t need to be Asian to watch this movie, enjoy the showing, or be a part of this movement. The more diverse the merrier. Hope you enjoy the movie!”
