Nam Joo Hyuk Talks About Wanting To Appear Manly And His Role In 'The Great Battle'

Nam Joo Hyuk shared how he chose his character in his upcoming film “The Great Battle” and why he had wanted to appear more manly in it.

On September 18, Nam Joo Hyuk participated in an interview ahead of the premiere for “The Great Battle.” The film is about the 88 days of battle at Ansi Fortress, between the Goguryeo and Tang Dynasties. Nam Joo Hyuk plays Sah Mul, who receives secret orders from Yeon Gae So Mun (played by Yoo Oh Sung) and searches for Yang Man Chun (played by Jo In Sung).

Nam Joo Hyuk joked, “Jo In Sung told me, ‘I’ll leave the visuals to you,’ but I’ve never received it. I’m a manly man.” He continued, “Since my character was the only one that studied abroad, I didn’t have a beard, and I had long hair. I wanted to appear masculine, too. I had lost a lot of weight during that time and looked a bit soft, but I really wanted to look like a tough man.”

On why he chose the film, he explained, “I decided on my appearance solely by looking at my character Sah Mul. I’m learning about other aspects like the film’s production budget and such even now.” He added honestly, “I had a lot of confidence in my character. I took on the challenge with confidence, but a lot of pressure came on later. At first, I didn’t know which senior actors were in it, and how expensive the film was. When I saw the character, I didn’t want to lose this opportunity. I don’t want to kick away the opportunities that come to me.”

Nam Joo Hyuk then evaluated his acting, saying, “When I first received the script, I knew about the battle at Ansi Fortress. I didn’t think that Sah Mul as a character would just pass me by. I think my acting was the best I could do at my age. It was the film that shows myself the most.”

“The Great Battle” will premiere on September 19.
