Nam Tae Hyun Explains Why He Was Unhappy Before Leaving YG
In a recent interview, former WINNER member Nam Tae Hyun opened up about why he had been unhappy before leaving YG Entertainment.
Two years after he debuted as a member of WINNER in 2014, Nam Tae Hyun left the group and his agency YG Entertainment in November 2016. The following year, he formed his own band, South Club, which released its first EP “90” in June 2017.
The singer recently sat down for an interview with newspaper Chosun Ilbo to talk about his music career and how things had changed since his departure from WINNER. Remarking that the question he was asked the most often was “why he had left YG,” Nam Tae Hyun explained, “I didn’t leave on bad terms. I wanted to live as myself, in my own style.”
He went on, “I found it stressful that even when I was resting, a security guard and a manager would always follow me around, even in the parking lot or when I went to the convenience store.”
Nam Tae Hyun also revealed that although he had participated in writing and composing some of WINNER’s songs, he hadn’t enjoyed the process of working on music under his former agency. “It felt like a survival game,” he recalled. “All I worried about was coming up with catchy lyrics or an addictive hook that would fit the group’s style. I wasn’t happy at all.”
When asked to name the hardest thing about going out on his own, Nam Tae Hyun replied that it was having to figure out each day what he would do the next day. “[During my time with WINNER,] every evening, the company would send us a text message with our schedule for the next day, and all we needed to do was just go where the schedule told us to go,” he recalled with a laugh.
Nam Tae Hyun also remarked that it wasn’t easy finding places for South Club to perform. “I felt like I should be doing something, anything at all,” he said, sharing that at one point, he had even considered taking up a part-time gig at a music bar. However, he decided in the end, “I’d rather spend that time focusing on [composing] music.”
South Club is currently preparing to release their second mini album on October 24. The band will also be holding a solo concert on October 27 at West Bridge Live Hall in Seoul.
