"Pajama Friends" PD Shares What It's Like Filming With Red Velvet's Joy, WJSN's Cheng Xiao, Song Ji Hyo, And Jang Yoon Joo

The producing director (PD) of Lifetime’s new travel variety program, “Pajama Friends,” recently shared his thoughts on his amazing cast!

The MCs of “Pajama Friends” are actress Song Ji Hyo, model Jang Yoon Joo, Red Velvet’s Joy, and WJSN’s Cheng Xiao. When asked about his casting choices, PD Kim Joo Hyung said, “After casting a model and actress in Jang Yoon Joo and Song Ji Hyo, I wanted the rest of the cast to have a different job. I looked around for idols and singers and cast Joy and Cheng Xiao.”

He continued, “Joy said that ‘Pajama Friends’ was her first time filming a reality program like this, but I was surprised by how quickly she became friends with the other cast members. She is very honest and doesn’t hold back, even when talking about her dorm address and her personal worries. That’s why Jang Yoon Joo was able to give her some advice from her experience with the entertainment industry as well.”

About Cheng Xiao, he said, “When you live together with people from different countries, you get a new perspective. That’s why I cast her out of the other idols. I don’t know if it’s because she’s from China, but she’s very generous. Even when she couldn’t join in all the filming because of her work in China, she would give presents to the other members. It was interesting to see how she reacted to certain parts of Korean culture as well. At first all of them were awkward with each other, but after a few nights they were able to open up and share personal things.”

PD Kim Joo Hyung had previously worked with Song Ji Hyo on “Running Man.” He said, “I think that Song Ji Hyo is the only actress who is completely familiar with the world of variety. No matter where you put her, she has a sense of responsibility and does well. But she’s a very quiet person, so she felt a bit pressured as the leader during the first half of the show. She’s shy and not the type to lead people directly, so that’s why I cast Jang Yoon Joo.”

He went on, “Jang Yoon Joo and Song Ji Hyo have great chemistry. I saw Jang Yoon Joo on another show and she’s such a good entertainer. Song Ji Hyo also met her before while working on OnStyle’s ‘Get It Beauty.’ She’s like a neighborhood association president. She listens to the other members’ opinions and concerns. The staff call her ‘Mentor Jang,’ because she uses her experience to help other people. Joy even said, ‘Everything works out when Jang Yoon Joo gets involved.'”

“Pajama Friends” premiered in September and airs every Saturday at 10:30 p.m. KST.
