"Law Of The Jungle" Responds To Criticism For Filming On Typhoon-Ravaged Island

SBS’s “Law of the Jungle” has responded to criticism for filming on the Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific that was devastated by a category five typhoon on October 25.

Despite relief efforts being under way for what reports say was one of the strongest storms of 2018 and the worst that has hit any part of the U.S. since 1935, “Law of the Jungle” production staff left Korea for the islands on October 30.

When some viewers criticized the production for filming a variety program at a location that is reeling from a natural disaster, the production said that they did consider changing their location due to the typhoon. “However,” they explained, “the tourist industry is huge on the island of Tinian, and with the locals’ livelihood being largely affected in the aftermath of the typhoon, we received a request saying that filming on the island would be of help.”

They added, “We are doing our best to not affect the local area in a negative way. Starting November 4, the staff and cast will be helping with relief. After filming, we will be donating generators and other items that are needed locally.”

Filming at the islands began after water was shut off, so the production also promised to return to their base camp if their filming affected the locals or if there were any complaints.

“Law of the Jungle” at Mariana Islands will air in December.
