Park Hae Mi's Husband Hwang Min Receives Sentence For Fatal Drunk Driving Crash
Hwang Min, husband of actress Park Hae Mi, has received his sentence for the fatal drunk driving crash that occurred in August earlier this year.
On December 12, the Uijeongbu District Court in Gyeonggi Province held the final trial for Hwang Min’s case, which ended with the presiding judge Jung Woo Jung sentencing Hwang Min to 4 years and 6 months in prison for violating the Act on Special Cases concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents.
The court stated, “The defendant has had his driver’s license revoked more than two times because of his reckless driving. He caused another car crash despite that situation, which had the wretched consequence of killing two passengers and injuring the other two.”
They continued, “In weighing his offence, we took into consideration the fact that he has not been forgiven by the family of the deceased, that he has a past history of drunk driving and driving without a license, the opinions of the injured passengers, and the defendant’s own confession and reflections.”
The family of one of the deceased victims, actor Yoo Dae Sung, gave a statement after the trial. Their legal representative stated to Xportsnews, “The family remains unsatisfied with Hwang Min’s punishment but will respect the judgment of the court. From the time of the accident to his hospital stay to his discharge, there was plenty of time for Hwang Min to apologize sincerely to us, but he did not. Yoo Dae Sung had been preparing for a new project in his career just before his untimely death, so how must his family feel now?”
The drunk driving crash occurred on August 27 when the car driven by Hwang Min crashed into a 25-ton truck parked at the side of the road. At the time, Hwang Min’s blood alcohol level was 0.104 percent, high enough to have his license revoked. The other four passengers in the car were part of the Hae Mi Musical Company and the deceased victims were 20 and 33 years old.
Park Hae Mi initially suspended all activities after her husband’s incident and later donated her performance fees.
Hwang Min was arrested on charges of dangerous driving on October 1 and admitted to all charges pressed against him at his trial on November 2. At another trial on November 28, the police recommended the maximum punishment for the offence (6 years). With this final trial, Hwang Min has been sentenced to prison for 4 years and 6 months.
