Shoo To Stand Trial After Prosecutors Take Action On Gambling And Fraud Cases

S.E.S.’s Shoo’s gambling case in Macao has been forwarded to the courts.

On December 27, it was reported that the prosecution office of Seoul recently indicted Shoo on suspicion of habitual gambling. Shoo is under suspicion for having gambled hundreds of millions of won in a casino in Macao several times since last year. However, her other charges on fraud and domestic gambling have been dismissed.

Last August, Shoo was sued on the suspicion of fraud for borrowing and not returning two separate sums of 350 million won (approximately $313,100) and 250 million won (approximately $223,700) at a hotel casino in Seoul from two acquaintances for the purpose of gambling.

Only foreigners can enter Paradise Walker Hill Casino in Seoul, but Shoo could enter because she possesses a Japanese permanent residence card. The prosecution, on Shoo’s domestic gambling suspicion, determined her case to be a special exception as she gambled at a foreigner-only casino as an overseas permanent resident. Furthermore, on the suspicion of fraud, they could not determine the specific funds that the two individuals lent and determined that the three people exchanged money while gambling together.

While the fraud and domestic gambling charges were dismissed, Shoo’s charge on habitual gambling in Macao was prosecuted after determining that it was possible to pursue the charge without exceptions.

According to the law, a simple gambling charge is a fine of up to 10 million won (approximately $8,900), while a repeated offender can receive up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won (approximately $17,900).
