“Hip Hop Boy” has impressed with his vocals on “The King of Mask Singer”!
On the January 20 episode of the show, contestants “Hip Hop Boy” and “Metal Boy” went up against each other on the fourth match of the first round. They sang a duet of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” wowing audiences with their voices.
The panelists went on to discuss the performance from “Hip Hop Boy.” Kim Ho Young commented, “Just watching ‘Hip Hop Boy’ is fun. He feels very large, and it reminds me of a particular someone.” Hwang Chi Yeol remarked, “It feels like ‘Hip Hop Boy’ is a dancer,” while Shin Bong Sun shared, “I think ‘Hip Hop Boy’ is a foreigner.” They mentioned several possibilities, from a Hollywood actor, Dennis Kang, and more.
“Hip Hop Boy” also wowed audiences in the personal skills segment of the show with his strength. Not only did he crush an apple with his bare hands, he also lifted both f(x)’s Luna and Shin Bong Sun easily in his arms.
Spoiler
Unfortunately, “Metal Boy” was the contestant to advance to the second round with 71 votes to 28 votes. “Hip Hop Boy” sang his second round song, 10cm’s “Americano,” and was revealed to be major league baseball player Eric Thames. Currently a batter for the Milwaukee Brewers, he previously played for the NC Dinos in the KBO League.
Eric Thames introduced himself in Korean, and shared that he had come to Korea to record the show. He added that he hadn’t been able to leave his room in case he was caught, and that he had been practicing singing in his room.
When asked if he had practiced crushing the apple, he said he hadn’t. Eric Thames emphasized that he was a “manly man,” making the audience laugh. It was also revealed that the baseball player often wore a uniform in the United States that says “manly man” in Korean.
He remarked, “I miss Korean meat and soju every day. I watched ‘The King of Mask Singer’ a lot on TV when practicing. I didn’t imagine I would be on here. It’s really cool to be here. I want to be remembered as a player who does his best.”
