Kim Dong Han Shares His Feelings About Wanna One's Disbandment + Responds To Idea Of Competition With Their Solo Debuts
Kim Dong Han recently sat down for an interview with No Cut News, during which he talked about the disbandment of Wanna One, the next season of “Produce 101,” and more.
On Mnet’s survival show “Produce 101 Season 2” in 2017, Kim Dong Han competed alongside the contestants who would go on to win spots in the project group Wanna One. The 11-member group made their debut in August 2017 and promoted together until their contracts ended on December 31, 2018 and they performed their final concerts together in January of this year.
After “Produce 101 Season 2,” Kim Dong Han also promoted with a project group. The group JBJ was formed after fans imagined an ideal combination of eliminated trainees, and they were active together as a group for several months. After the end of their contracts, Kim Dong Han debuted as a solo artist in 2018.
During the interview, Kim Dong Han was asked how he felt when he saw Wanna One officially disband recently.
“It made my heart ache,” he said. “If you’re a project group, it means that the length of your promotional period is already decided. We all left one at a time at the end of JBJ’s final concert, and Wanna One did that as well at their final concert. I couldn’t go to the concert venue myself and I just saw it online. But since I know a bit about how they might have been feeling, my heart ached and I thought they must have cried a lot. I don’t usually cry but at JBJ’s final concert I cried so hard for the first and last time.”
Mnet has announced a fourth season in its “Produce 101” series, and Kim Dong Han was asked if he plans to watch the show. He replied, “I watched a bit of ‘Produce 48’ last year. But to be honest, since I know how it goes, my heart ached and I couldn’t watch it much. Isn’t it a difficult program by nature? Of course it was a good memory for me, but I went through a lot of hard times then.”
“I heard that it’s a male edition this time,” he said. “I’ve always liked watching flashy performances so I think I’ll watch things like the performances. But seeing the participants cry is too sad, so I don’t think I’ll be able to watch that.”
It was also mentioned to Kim Dong Han that there are now many members from Wanna One who are planning solo debuts, and he was asked for his thoughts about being in a friendly competition with the guys he appeared with on “Produce 101 Season 2.”
Kim Dong Han replied, “I think we all have our own unique charming qualities. I think that lately there are much fewer solo male artists than boy groups. The number of male solo artists is increasing, and I think of that as creating a new stepping stone.”
