Kim Jae Hwan Reveals How Wanna One Members Support Each Other, Thoughts About His Solo Debut, And More

On May 20, Kim Jae Hwan held a showcase for his first solo mini album “Another.” At the showcase, he performed his title track “Begin Again” as well as “Designer” to show off his powerful dance moves.

Kim Jae Hwan promoted for approximately one year and six months as a main vocalist of Wanna One, a group formed through Mnet’s “Produce 101 Season 2.” This is Kim Jae Hwan’s return with a solo album five months after official activities as Wanna One ended on December 31, 2018.

When asked if he was supported by other Wanna One members, he replied, “We have a group chatroom among the members. We continue to keep in touch and support each other.”

He continued, “Because we are so close, instead of awkward ways of supporting each other, we send each other funny pictures and reminisce about our past days together. Through those things, we support and motivate each other.”

Kim Jae Hwan also talked about the Wanna One members who have already debuted as soloists. He shared, “I had lots of things I was curious about when watching the members who already debuted as soloists. In particular, I had a feeling it may have been hard on Ha Sung Woon, who debuted solo a lot earlier than I did. However, I also wanted to prepare my album quickly and release it.”

His first mini album “Another” includes a variety of genres to display Kim Jae Hwan’s broad musical talents. The album includes a total of six songs, including the title track “Begin Again,” “Like That” (literal translation), “My Star,” “Blow Me,” “Designer,” and “Melodrama.”

The title track “Begin Again” is a pop R&B ballad composed, written and arranged by Im Chang Jung and also co-composed by Kim Jae Hwan. It is a song anyone who has gone through a break-up can relate to.

In addition to his title track, Kim Jae Hwan co-composed all the other tracks and also participated in writing the lyrics for four tracks in his album. He commented, “Since I was little, I had the ambition and dream of becoming a singer-songwriter.” He added, “I’ve been practicing a lot for that. But because I had the opportunity to, I really wanted to make an album that shows my own unique color. I put my color into it and had so much fun working on it. I really enjoyed working on it.”

Kim Jae Hwan shared his thoughts about being a vocalist. He stated, “When I was part of Wanna One, I really learned a lot. I grew a lot during that time.” He shared, “Even after that ended, I didn’t want to get rid of those vocals and I did my best to keep the emotions I had while singing during that time because I liked it. To be honest, I want to be an idol for the rest of my life. I want to be an idol that is good at singing, good at music, and that continues to improve. I’m not great, but as I grow, I want to be an example of ‘I can do it too.'”

He also mentioned his thoughts about dancing. He revealed, “I liked dancing during my Wanna One days. I still haven’t quit dancing.” He added, “I think that because of those days, I am able to dance and enjoy dancing. That’s why I feel at ease, am enjoying myself, and feel happy to be able to show a variety of things. I will continue to do my best with variety and depth.”

With regard to his dance track “Designer,” he stated, “I am grateful because I’ve always wanted to do funky music similar to songs by Bruno Mars.”
