DAY6 Talks About Their Production Process, Music Style, Favorite Genres, And More

DAY6 recently took part in an interview with online music magazine IZM, where they talked about their style of music, production process, and more.

Asked about how they make their music, Sungjin explained that they try to include each member’s ideas about the riff and melody and work on it together. He added,  “We also make tracks individually and as units. The extent to which each member participates in making the song depends on the ‘point’ we want to emphasize.” He shared that the “point” he was referring to could be gaining the support of the masses, the musicality of the song, or both, depending on the song. “We try to incorporate each member’s musical tastes into our music. Because we all like different genres, our songs turn out to be a mixture of various styles, so we focus on trimming out those different styles.”

Sungjin shared that he enjoys modern rock and British pop, including music by artists like Radiohead, Coldplay, and Ed Sheeran. Wonpil commented he has a similar taste and prefers songs that don’t become part of a fad or trend. Jae shared his love for folk music, adding that an album that recently left a big impression on him was Jeremy Zucker and Chelsea Cutler’s EP “brent.” On the other hand, Dowoon enjoys a variety music from trap and electronic to Quinn XCII.

Lastly, Young K expressed, “Ever since I was little, I listened to hip hop, punk rock, and Britpop. Lately, I’ve been enjoying bright music that’s comfortable to listen to and puts you in a good mood. I learn how to form harmonies by listening to boy bands like Why Don’t We and apply Rudimental’s bright energy [to our music].”

Switching topics, Young K revealed, “Within the company, we have the fewest opportunities to talk to producer Park Jin Young. But every time we have a meeting with him, he tells us, ‘I’m looking forward to listening to DAY6’s music!’ I’m thankful.” Sungjin added, “I remember producer [Park Jin Young] really liked ‘I Smile.'”

As for their most popular tracks, Sungjin named “You Were Beautiful,” “I Loved You,” and “I Like You,” and Jae chose “I Wait” as a song that was unexpectedly popular.

When asked about being one of the few bands in the K-pop scene, Jae replied, “When we’re working on music, we don’t think about the concept of being an ‘idol’ that deeply. Actually, I don’t think any group is conscious of that. They just make the music they like to make. If they like rock, they make rock music, and if they like pop, they make pop music. Instead of dividing the styles in our music into an ‘idol-like style’ and a ‘rock style,’ we’re inspired by various musical styles to make the song memorable. I want to create music that’s uniquely DAY6 by combining the strengths [in each style].”

Many bands have an encompassing societal message in their music, but according to Young K, DAY6 aims for something different. He said, “Before debuting, I also wanted to deal with big topics, and I put it into action. But I realized that if the lyrics contain too many ideas and people have a hard time understanding them, it’s a failure. Producer Park Jin Young also gave me lots of advice about that. Through our music, I want to show our honest feelings and our lives as they are.”

Meanwhile, DAY6 will be holding their second fan meeting on June 29 at the Jamsil Arena in Seoul.
