11 Supporting K-Drama Characters That Are Total Scene Stealers
As weird and wonderful as K-drama lead characters may sometimes be, they always have to fit inside a certain framework in order to make the story work. Heroes and heroines are generally good or redeemable. They go through hardships, learn tough lessons, and receive rewards for their struggles. Supporting characters, on the other hand, are a whole different ball game, and that’s why we love them so much!
Supporting characters could be good guys, bad guys, friends, colleagues, or complete randoms who fall from the sky – sometimes literally. They don’t get much screen time, so they have to make the most of what they have, and they’re way less predictable, which means anything could happen while they’re on screen. So it’s really no surprise that supporting K-drama characters can be the best ones in the show! Here are 11 of our favorites. Have fun getting to know them!

1. Uhm So Hye in “Her Private Life”
Let’s face it, her fashion sense alone is enough to make the former Director Uhm (Kim Sun Young) a scene stealer. It’s a perfect match for her ever-wackier hairstyles and that creepy singsong voice that goes from a whisper to a scream in half a second. Throw in a maniacal streak of poorly-executed cartoon villainy and you’ve got yourself a woman who would have you rolling your eyes if you weren’t kind of in awe of her.

2. Han Sung in “Hwarang”
A scene stealer in real life makes a great scene stealer in Dramaland. In “Hwarang,” BTS’s V mesmerizes us as Han Sung, a character whose dreamy innocence conceals a brave, passionate intensity that runs deep beneath. Whether he’s doing his best take on a sword dance, or fanboying over his man crush Sun Woo (Park Seo Joon), Han Sung does it with irrepressible charm and an irresistible smile.

3. Bong Se Ra and Yang Cheol in “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim”
These two are a package deal – we can’t write about one with mentioning the other. Bold, brash, and somewhat hapless Se Ra (Hwang Bo Ra) makes a great match for strong, silent Yang Cheol (Kang Hong Seok). She’s used to being laughed at, but here’s a man who never mocks her. Instead, he gives her all the gallant, gentlemanly gestures she’s always longed for, with a dramatic flair that suits her perfectly. Now can they get their own drama already?

4. Jennifer in “30 But 17”
There’s no one quite like Jennifer (Ye Ji Won). She shows up one day on the doorstep of Chan (Ahn Hyo Seop) and Mister Gong (Yang Se Jong), looking for all the world like a modernist Mary Poppins who may or may not be a robot. But despite her monochrome outfits and her monotone voice, Jennifer is a warm, loving soul who has a wise quote for every situation, and a unique ability to heal what hurts in everyone she meets.

5. Kim Hwan in “Familiar Wife”
Who knew VIXX’s N would make such a great snarky office worker? Starlights might have seen it coming, but for the rest of us, Hakyeon was a total revelation as Hwan, the newbie loan adviser who’d rather be anywhere else. Whenever there’s a problem, Hwan’s the one who caused it. Whenever there’s something that’s best left unsaid, Hwan’s the one who blurts it out. Don’t like it? That’s your problem, Hwan’s too bored to care.

6. Kim Ji Woong in “Oh My Venus”
Our heroine Joo Eun (Shin Min Ah) first meets Ji Woong (Henry) as her seatmate on a plane. He gives her a firm handshake, then a big hug, and calls it “destiny.” You’d think he was the male lead from that little performance, but no, that’s just Ji Woong being Ji Woong. He’s as fun and goofy as Henry himself, taking every opportunity to dance, scream, flail around, and throw in a sentence or seven in American English.

7. Jung Min Joo in “Memories of the Alhambra”
A main lead’s sibling can sometimes get lost in the crowd of K-drama supporting characters, but not Min Joo (Lee Re). She plays Park Shin Hye‘s little sister, but most of her best moments on screen are with Hyun Bin. When she’s not whacking him in the face with her hair while practicing dance moves, she’s sweet-talking him into getting her an idol audition. In fact, the more audacious she gets, the more he seems to admire her, and so do we.
8. Noh Sun Ki in “Coffee Prince”
Before Kim Jae Wook was Ryan The Lion, he was Sun Ki The Waffle Prince. Back in 2007, he looked pretty much exactly the same as he does now, which explains why fangirls chased him around Seoul, begging for a waffle from his street cart. Luckily, Han Kyul (Gong Yoo) hires Sun Ki at the Coffee Prince cafe, where he steals every scene with his deadpan stare, inky black nail polish and unexpectedly soft underbelly.

9. Jo Min Ja in “Healer”
This is one scene stealer you wouldn’t want to mess with, unless you want your credit card data stolen too. Min Ja (Kim Mi Kyung), known simply as “ahjumma” to our hero Healer (Ji Chang Wook), is a hacker extraordinaire. She even has enough flex to stop a speeding subway train, but not until she’s had a good grumble about it first. Our Healer is forever driving her crazy with his rebellious ways, so it’s a good thing ahjumma has her knitting and kimbap to soothe her spirits.

10. Nosy Jang in “Pinocchio”
Think your boss is a pain? You clearly haven’t met Jang Hyun Kyu (Min Sung Wook), known to newbies at YGN as Nosy Jang, the senior reporter with a rep for terrifying his wide-eyed young charges. All his power is held in his much-cherished headband, which he scrapes back off his forehead with crazy-eyed relish. But even the craziest sunbaes can fall in love sometimes, y’know. We’re shipping Nosy Jang with camerawoman Jae Hwan (Choo Soo Hyun)!

11. Yo Na in “Kill Me, Heal Me”
The only scene stealer to be played by a lead actor (Ji Sung), Ahn Yo Na is a flirty, feisty teenage girl… who happens to be trapped in the body of a man in his thirties. From the moment you hear Yo Na’s battle cry of “OPPA!” you know you’re in for a treat. Every time she reappears for a hair-pulling fight with Ri Jin (Hwang Jung Eum) or a madcap kiss chase with Ri Jin’s twin Ri Ohn (Park Seo Joon), we’re laughing so hard we can’t actually breathe.
