Jo Jung Suk Shares Stories Behind His Iconic Scenes In Films And Musicals
Jo Jung Suk talked about his experience on stage and in films.
On the July 27 episode of JTBC’s “Ask Us Anything,” Jo Jung Suk and Girls’ Generation member YoonA appeared to promote their upcoming film “E.X.I.T.”
“This is from when I was appearing in ‘Grease,'” began the actor. “Like what Young Chul said before, my character had to reveal his butt. I couldn’t show my butt during practice, so I said that I would do it during for the first time during the real performance.”
He added, “I went up on stage for the first night of the play. I wore jeans, dressed up to look nice, sang the song, and bared my butt. As all of you may know, when you sweat a lot…” Super Junior’s Kim Heechul interjected, “It got stuck?” Jo Jung Suk continued, “Your underwear gets stuck. I was supposed to reveal it quickly with an impact, but I didn’t know the extent to which I needed to bare it. I put [my pants] down, and [I still remember] the air ventilation and screams at the time. I couldn’t control my strength, so I really can’t forget about it.”
He explained, “I was only supposed to reveal it to a certain extent, but I revealed it in a refreshing way. I revealed my real butt over 300 times.”
Kang Ho Dong then asked Jo Jung Suk about his improvisation skills and whether they were calculated or spontaneous. The actor replied, “Improvised lines come out spontaneously.”
As for his memorable scene of describing what a kiss is in the film “Architecture 101,” Jo Jung Suk said, “Those were improvised too.” He explained that the script had just a couple of lines, and he’s the one who added the other motions and fun to them. He added, “I was saying my lines, and the director and staff members’ shoulders were shaking because it was funny.”
Speaking about his dancing scene with Song Kang Ho in the film “The Face Reader,” Jo Jung Suk said, “That wasn’t improvised, but I practiced alone. In the dressing room before filming that scene, I thought about what kind of dance they would’ve done at the time. Everyone who appeared as gisaeng (courtesan) was dancing like this. I wondered, ‘Did they really dance like this back then? Wouldn’t your body naturally move like this if music came on?'”
Kim Heechul inquired about Song Kang Ho’s dancing and Jo Jung Suk explained, “He saw me practicing and told the director that it was good. He suggested we try it together and we did it together.”
He concluded, “To be honest, many people misunderstand this but I really don’t improvise a lot. Many people think, however, that I improvise a lot and it’s a misunderstanding.”
