Lyricist JQ Praises EXO's Chen As Best Idol Lyricist + Shares Stories Of Popular Songs He's Worked On
Lyricist JQ appeared on MBC FM’s “Idol Radio” and talked about the songs he’s worked on.
JQ has worked on many hit songs like SHINee’s “Love Should Go On,” EXO’s “Tempo,” “Ko Ko Bop,” and “Power,” Girls’ Generation’s “Holiday,” Red Velvet’s “Bad Boy,” “Produce 101 Season 2” Knock team’s “Open Up,” Shaun’s “Way Back Home,” and NCT 127’s “Simon Says” and “Superhuman.”
When asked which song has brought him the most royalties, JQ picked EXO’s “Tempo” and explained, “Of my recent income, ‘Tempo’ is responsible for about 25 percent of it.”
He also talked proudly of when EXO performed “Power” at the ending ceremony of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and said, “It was a family honor. My parents were so happy and said, ‘It’s an amazing thing that lyrics that our son wrote were heard by people all around the world.’ I felt proud that I could move people with lyrics of a dance track.”
JQ also had high praise for EXO’s Chen as the idol who writes the best lyrics. He said, “Chen taps into his emotions very well and the words in his heart are extraordinary. If not handled right, it could lead to lyrics that most people won’t get, but if you set yourself on a good direction, it can lead to amazing lyrics. Chen is someone with extraordinary potential.”
Though he mostly works with SM Entertainment artists, he also worked on “Produce 101 Season 2” for the song “Open Up.” JQ said, “Though they were young, we wanted to show a little sexiness through the song. At the time, Kang Daniel performed with a bandaged hand, and I thought he looked so cool.”
JQ also worked as a rap instructor for a long time and said, “After working on the rap for SHINee’s ‘Love Should Go On,’ I worked with EXO, f(x), and Red Velvet members. I checked their pronunciation and had them perform popular rap verses to work on their weaknesses.”
