Jang Ki Yong On His Upcoming Film, Admiration For Ma Dong Suk, And His Goals As An Actor

In a new interview, actor Jang Ki Yong talked about his goals as an actor as well as his upcoming film “Bad Guys: The Movie.”

Jang Ki Yong, who plays the role of a former detective named Go Yoo Sung in the film, said, “I’m so happy and overwhelmed that my first film is such a great one. I was so happy to be able to work with seniors that I respect and look up to. I was worried because I’m still lacking in many ways, but I was able to shake off my nerves with everyone’s help. I think I could have done better, but I’m satisfied with the final product.”

The actor said he had been a fan of his fellow actors — Kim Sang Joong, Ma Dong Suk, Kim Ah Joong — before, but after working with them, came to like them even more. He revealed that Ma Dong Suk especially helped him in action scenes. Jang Ki Yong said, “Whenever I was practicing action on set, Ma Dong Suk would come and give me advice, and my heart would flutter. He was really busy himself, but he would take time to take care of me, and I was so thankful.”

He added, “Seeing [Ma Dong Suk] do so well both in Korea and abroad, it’s so impressive. I’ve found myself looking forward to the potential of similar opportunities in the future, after I’ve worked hard for a long time.”

On how the film differs from the drama, Jang Ki Yong said, “The drama has more of a deep, dark, and intense feel, while the movie is more entertainment and fun. I’m personally a fan of the noir image, so it took some getting used to, but after seeing the final product, I could see the appeal.”

As an actor, Jang Ki Yong says he increasingly wants to hear compliments about his acting. “[Hearing compliments] gives me the strength to take on new challenges and to dream bigger. These days, rather than feeling pressure, I’m more excited. I want to grow while showing many different sides to myself. I just want to take it one step at a time.” He added that he prefers being on set to taking time off, because when he’s not doing anything, he’ll start to question if he’s doing well or if there’s anything he’s missed or needs to do.

There’s so much that he’d like to try in the future, said the actor. “I like action and noir, but there’s so much that I want to try, like really bright and happy roles, historical dramas, or musical movies.”

“My dream is to hear someone say, ‘This is something that only Jang Ki Yong can do.’ I want to become an irreplaceable actor. To do that, I need people to be able to put unwavering trust in me. I plan to start building up to that little by little.”
