AKMU On Their Success With Comeback Album, How They've Changed And Grown, And More

AKMU, who swept music charts with “How Can I Love the Heartbreak, You’re the One I Love” from their recently released album “SAILING,” appeared on the September 26 broadcast of KBS CoolFM’s “Soo Hyun’s Raise the Volume,” hosted by AKMU’s Lee Soo Hyun.

“SAILING” is the duo’s first album since “Summer Episode,” which dropped in July 2017. Lee Soo Hyun said, “It’s difficult to get an all-kill, and we weren’t expecting it. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, I’m so happy, and I feel like I could fly.” Lee Chan Hyuk added, “It’s not our first time getting No. 1, but I do think this is my first time being this excited about it.”

Lee Soo Hyun said that the album contains music that they wanted to do, and that they weren’t trying to appeal to the masses. “But a lot of people loved the music, so I’m happy. I saw that it had entered the charts at No. 4 and thought, ‘Okay, that’s it. I’m not going to look anymore,’ but then my brother texted me that the song hit No. 1.”

Talking a little about their relationship, Lee Soo Hyun revealed that her brother nags a lot. “He nags more than our dad. I actually think our dad doesn’t really nag much at all these days.”

Lee Chan Hyuk explained, “We’ll give each other advice or nag. Our parents don’t nag much, but we do it to each other instead.” Lee Soo Hyun promptly joked, “That’s how you’re going to package it? He’s gotten really good at defending himself. It’s good.”

On how her brother has changed after leaving the marines, she said, “He’s gotten better at a lot of things. He’s better at defending himself, and he’s much better at speaking. He’s even increased his number of lines in songs. If I didn’t have my own songs in the album, it would basically be just his album. That’s why I have two solo songs.”

Lee Chan Hyuk praised his sister’s musical ability, saying, “Soo Hyun sent me two songs via email, and I thought she could do one of them. She even played the harmonica herself, and I think we can eventually release that version. I felt so proud in that moment.”

Lee Soo Hyun said, “The two songs I sent him were ‘Chantey’ and ‘Farewell.’ The demo of ‘Chantey’ was completely rejected. He said, ‘Yea, that’s not it.'”
