Jung Yu Mi Talks About Negativity Surrounding Film "Kim Ji Young, Born 1982" And Malicious Rumors
Jung Yu Mi has revealed her thoughts on the controversy surrounding her upcoming movie “Kim Ji Young, Born 1982” and how she feels about those who spread false rumors.
On October 16, Jung Yu Mi took part in an interview for “Kim Ji Young, Born 1982.” The film is based on a novel of the same title that sparked a debate among Korean netizens for its take on feminism. Jung Yu Mi plays the protagonist Kim Ji Young, an ordinary woman who is someone’s daughter, wife, mother, and co-worker.
The actress shared, “This is a commercial film. I’ve acted in many projects that have several main characters, and at times, I avoided starring in films with only one or two protagonists because I felt too pressured. But the moment I saw the scenarios for ‘Kim Ji Young, Born 1982,’ I thought, ‘I have to do this,’ and didn’t think anything else.”
She continued, “I didn’t think [the movie] would stir up an issue this big. It’s immense. It doesn’t feel real. Honestly, I don’t understand it, but I do think it could be controversial since people can have different thoughts. Until now, I’ve only heard the people who have expressed their thoughts. I think that out of the people who haven’t voiced their opinions, there will be many more people who share the same opinion as me.”
The character Kim Ji Young is a housewife, but Jung Yu Mi has never experienced the life of a housewife. She shared, “But it’s something my grandmother and mother have experienced. Whenever I had a hard time expressing her emotions, I carefully read the novel. It’s my job to show everyone things I’ve never experienced.”
The actress also shared her thoughts on malicious comments and rumors. Jung Yu Mi had been the center of a groundless rumor last year. Her agency took legal action against those who published and spread the rumors, and they were ultimately slapped with fines.
Jung Yu Mi explained that she genuinely felt angry while delivering one of the lines near the ending of “Kim Ji Young, Born 1982,” which goes, “They talk about me when they don’t even know much about me.”
Regarding her past rumor, she stated, “It’s so surprising and absurd. Saying we have to endure it because we’re celebrities is really sad. It’s ridiculous to make up things that aren’t true. [At the time], I thought, “Why do I have to be here (police station) when I didn’t do anything wrong?'”
“Kim Ji Young, Born 1982,” starring Jung Yu Mi and Gong Yoo, premieres on October 23.
