JTBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “My Country” has been receiving much love from audiences for its deep story and exciting action scenes, which make for a high-quality historical drama that recently achieved its highest viewership ratings yet. At the drama’s center is its wide cast of complex characters, and the female stars in particular have drawn attention for the ways they subvert the image of docile Joseon-era women.

Han Hee Jae (played by AOA’s Seolhyun) grew up in the Yihwaru courtesan house, but rather than becoming a courtesan, she raised her voice against the evils of the country and has walked on her own path since the beginning. Seo Seol (played by Jang Young Nam) emits overwhelming charisma as the head of the Yihwaru courtesan house. Yihwaru is not a regular courtesan house, but rather a central location for the flow of information. Seo Seol established Yihwaru after realizing early on that information would soon become money and power, and thus she holds mighty strength with her grasp on the information that would change the world. In the coming episodes, Seo Seol will continue to play a central role in the unfolding events, as she holds information pertaining to the misconduct that led to the death of Han Hee Jae’s mother.

Ambition that does not lose to anyone, Queen Sindeok

Queen Sindeok (played by Park Ye Jin) carries ambition that is equal to that of Lee Bang Won and Yi Sung Kye (played by Kim Young Chul). She commanded attention with her entrance in Episode 3, raising the tension as she refused to back down in the face of Lee Bang Won’s forceful energy, saying, “Know your place.”

While she was fleeing in fear for her life, Queen Sindeok left her young son Bang Seok (played by Kim Min Ho) in the care of Han Hee Jae and gave her a knife. The meaning behind the gesture was to tell Han Hee Jae to kill her rather than let her live subserviently as Choi Young’s pawn. This exchange indicated that Queen Sindeok is not just the simple wife of a powerful man, but rather a capable woman with great pride.
