Kakao/Daum Takes Measures Against Malicious Comments And Defamation Against Celebrities

On October 25, Kakao held a press conference at their office in Pangyo. Co-CEOs Yeo Min Soo and Jo Soo Yong announced that Kakao and Daum will be removing the comment feature for articles and pages related to entertainment news.

Yeo Min Soo said, “We will be temporarily closing down comments for entertainment news within this month and we will get rid of related search words for people within this year. As we know from the recent unfortunate news, entertainment news comments that reach the level of character defamation are detrimental to having a healthy public community.”

He continued, “While the original purpose of related search words was to provide users with a wide variety of helpful and informative content, we decided that these related search words have serious side effects such as invasion of privacy and defamation.”

Starting with this measure, Kakao plans on finding more ways to fundamentally improve their subscription and news services.

Jo Soo Yong added, “Matters that we have contemplated over the past two years will materialize in the first half of the next year. Since we have a societal responsibility we will take preemptive measures rather than wait until that time. We will do what we can prior to the official reorganization and observe user responses.”
