BTS Becomes 1st Artist In MAMA History To Get A "Daesang All Kill"; Takes Home 9 Trophies
BTS swept the Daesangs (grand prizes) at the 2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA)!
The ceremony was held on December 4 at the Nagoya Dome in Japan, with Park Bo Gum as host.
BTS was awarded all four Daesangs this year: Album of the Year for “Map of the Soul: Persona,” Worldwide Icon of the Year, Song of the Year for “Boy With Luv,” and Artist of the Year. This is the first time in history that an artist has received all the Daesangs at MAMA. BTS also swept the Daesangs of the 2019 Melon Music Awards last weekend.
The other awards that BTS won at 2019 MAMA were Best Male Group, Qoo10 Favorite Male Artist, Best Music Video for “Boy With Luv,” Best Dance Performance Male Group, and Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10. Best Collaboration also went to Lee Sora’s “Song Request,” which features Suga.
The group’s Album of the Year award for “Map of the Soul: Persona” was presented by Jimmy Fallon via a video message.
On stage, J-Hope said, “ARMY! I want to say thank you for this Daesang. I was a young boy who knew nothing but dancing. But as I joined Big Hit and became a member of BTS, I worked really hard and learned a lot about music from these friends. After debuting, I’ve been making music for you to listen to. I think this is a really meaningful award, both to me personally and to BTS. I want to say thank you. I study a lot while working on our albums, and I’m going to keep studying so that I can give you better music. We’ll keep bringing you all a good message and being a good influence. Thank you so much.”
Jimin then took the mic to say with a laugh, “First, thank you so much to Jimmy Fallon who made a special appearance.” He added, “We’re working on our next album now, and I think we’ll be able to put out an even better album than you’re expecting. Please look forward to it a lot. Thank you!” Finally, RM yelled out in English, “Thank you, Jimmy!”

When accepting the Worldwide Icon of the Year award, RM said in English, “ARMY, make some noise! Look at this award. This is for you guys!” He went on to say that they’d never thought of themselves as “worldwide” but they were given the title by all the ARMY watching the show.
“You guys gave us this title, you guys gave us the world,” he said. “This year we released an album called ‘Persona,’ and our persona is all made by you guys. We love you, ARMYs. Thank you, we love you!”

When they received the Song of the Year award, Jin said, “ARMY! We’ve received the Song of the Year award again because of ARMY. I want to thank our ARMY. We work really hard at making music. Our next album will have good music too. Many people — including the artists who are here today — many people are making good songs. I hope for a world in which all those songs are recognized and listened to. I know that there are dishonest methods, but what about making music with more honest methods? I hope for a time when everyone’s making good music and listening to good music.”

Last year when BTS won the Artist of the Year award, the group gave an emotional and tearful speech. When they won the same award today, Suga referenced this as he said, “Thank you, ARMY. 2019 was an intense year in which we worked really hard. Last year at MAMA, the members were crying, and we ran hard with the intention of working hard and doing our best. Thank you for giving us many awards.”
He went on to say, “At the time it can be so hard and feel like the world is going to collapse, but after time’s passed it becomes a time that you can think of with a smile. In the past year, we’ve improved more and became stronger. Thank you, ARMY.”
RM added that everyone worked hard this year, including those who took part in hosting the event, all the fans watching, the artists, staff, and more.
He commented, “There’s not a lot that we can do. We’re going to work hard at making music, practicing in the practice room, and dancing. We’re going to shine in our place as much as we can so that everyone who’s living in the same time as us can have strength. Seeing all of you gives us strength too, and we’re determined to work hard and shine bright. Everyone who’s watching over us, you’ve worked hard, and please watch over us next year too. Please be healthy and happy! Thank you!”
