Sewol Ferry Tragedy Documentary "In The Absence" Receives Oscar Nomination
The Korean documentary “In the Absence” has been nominated for an Oscar.
On January 13, the 92nd Academy Awards named director Yi Seung Jun and producer Gary Byung Seok Kam’s “In the Absence” as a nominee for Documentary Short Subject.

“In the Absence” is a documentary that chronicles the events of the April 16, 2014 Sewol Ferry tragedy with clips and phone calls from that day, when over 300 people, mostly high school students, lost their lives when the ferry sank.
The film previously won the grand jury prize at DOC NYC in 2018 along with first prize at the World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest for Long Form.
The 92nd Academy Awards will be held on February 9, 2020 at the Dolby Theaters in Hollywood at 8 p.m. ET.
