Eric Nam Explains Why He Avoids Talking About Appearing On "We Got Married" With MAMAMOO's Solar
Eric Nam opened up about why he avoids talking about his time on “We Got Married” and why he even feels cautious mentioning MAMAMOO’s Solar.
The MBC variety show “We Got Married” featured celebrities being matched up as virtual newlywed couples. Eric Nam and Solar spent eight months appearing as a “couple” on the show in 2016.
On February 3, the podcast “K-Pop Daebak w/ Eric Nam” featured the singer talking with his brother Eddie Nam about what’s happened after his time on the show.
“When I was promoting my album when it dropped in November, MAMAMOO and I were actually on a radio show together,” shared Eric Nam. “It was the first time all of us had been on a show together since ‘We Got Married.'”
“It was very, very awkward,” he said. “Let’s be very clear, we’re on very good terms. It was just funny because they still tease me every time. They still call me hyungbu, which is like ‘brother-in-law.'” He shared that the MAMAMOO members will call out to him “Hey hyungbu, how have you been?”
Eric Nam reflected on the show as he said that they had a great time, but he does try to avoid talking about MAMAMOO and Solar.
“It was a very sensitive topic for a long time, in the sense that I got a lot of hate,” he explained. “And I’m sure it probably went both ways too. But being on ‘We Got Married,’ for the people who are on it, if you are an idol or if you are a singer, there is a lot of sensitivity in terms of there are people who don’t care, and they’re just like, ‘It’s a great show’ or ‘We just really like you two as a pair,’ but there are also many people who really don’t like us that way.”
Eric Nam said that this made him always careful. “And even to this day sometimes, I just get random messages that aren’t the nicest messages about it,” he said. “And so I always try to avoid it.” He shared that he doesn’t want to dismiss or discount the topic, he just unfortunately feels sensitive talking about it.
“If you look back at the radio show, Solar and I were visibly very cautious and like uncomfortable at points,” he said. “It was like funny, it’s laughable to me, because I’m just like, ‘We can be friends,’ but it’s a cautious thing.” He went on to say that he still felt nervous talking about the topic at that moment. “It’s crazy that I still have to feel nervous to say, ‘I’m a MAMAMOO fan,'” he said.
