'Parasite' Becomes 1st Korean Film In 15 Years To Surpass 1 Million Moviegoers In Japan

“Parasite” has reached 1 million admissions in Japan!

The film, which has become an international sensation, hit theaters in Japan on January 10. Only 25 days later (on February 5), it surpassed 1 million total moviegoers.

The last time a Korean film surpassed a million admissions in Japan was 2005, when the movie “April Snow” starring Bae Yong Joon and Son Ye Jin hit the milestone.

“Parasite” is now the fourth Korean film to record 1 million moviegoers in Japan, following “Swiri” (1998), “Windstruck” (2004), and “April Snow.”

In addition, as of February 5, the film has reached profits of 1.4 billion yen (approximately $12.7 million). This is the first time a Korean film has exceeded 1 billion yen at the Japanese box office in 15 years since Jung Woo Sung and Son Ye Jin’s “A Moment to Remember” did so in 2005.

In the first weekend of its release in Japanese theaters, “Parasite” came in at No. 5 at the box office, but after it naturally became promoted through word-of-mouth, it rose to No. 3 at the box office last weekend, its fourth weekend in theaters.

“Parasite” has been having a hugely successful run this award season, including winning Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes, the cast taking home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Award, and much more. Before it became a worldwide hit, it won the highest prize of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival last May.

The movie is up for six Academy Awards at the February 9 ceremony, and Director Bong Joon Ho and all eight members of its main cast are confirmed to attend.
