Court Gives Ruling On Park Yoochun's Trial Over Failure To Pay Damages

On April 22, Park Yoochun attended a detention judgment trial at the Uijeongbu District Court. The trial was over his alleged failure to pay damages to one of the women who accused him of sexual assault (hereafter referred to as “A”).

A detention judgment trial is a trial that occurs when a debtor does not attend an appointment for property elucidation or refuses to submit a property list.

In 2016, “A” was one of four women who accused Park Yoochun of sexual assault (he was later found not guilty on all four counts). At the time, Park Yoochun filed a criminal complaint against “A” for alleged defamation and false statements. “A” received a ruling of not guilty in both her trials and the supreme court denied the prosecution’s request for an appeal.

In 2018, “A” filed a criminal complaint against Park Yoochun for compensation of 100 million won (about $81,000). The court ordered Park Yoochun and “A” to settle the damages suit through a mandatory mediation. In July 2019, the Seoul Court Mediation Center made the decision that Park Yoochun must pay “A” 50 million won (about $41,000) in damages. However, a detention judgment trial was assigned after Park Yoochun reportedly failed to pay the compensation.

In the April 22 trial, the Uijeongbu District Court ruled that Park Yoochun would not be punished. When a detention judgment trial hands down a ruling of “non-punishment,” it usually means that the punishment is unfair or that the debtor proved that he was meeting his obligations by the date of the trial.

On April 23, it was reported that Park Yoochun had a face-to-face meeting with the Uijeongbu mayor, Ahn Byung Yong. A source from Uijeongbu City Hall told Xportsnews, “We are aware that Park Yoochun visited us this morning. It seems that it was not a very long meeting. We do not know why they met nor what they talked about. It seems as though it was not a planned meeting.”

One of Park Yoochun’s representatives told MK’s Star Today, “He is living in Namyangju and recently had a trial in Uijeongbu. He went there to seek out the advice of an adult, who is his senior in life.”
