Naver Announces Removal Of 'Angry' Reaction Emoji From Entertainment Articles

Naver is taking additional measures to protect celebrities from malicious commenters.

Previously, the portal site removed the comment feature on entertainment news articles and disabled its related search term service.

On May 15, Naver shared that it has now also gotten rid of three reaction emojis: “warm and fuzzy,” “angry,” and “want a follow-up article.” In their place, the site has added four new positive emojis: “support,” “congratulations,” “looking forward to it,” and “surprised.”

Therefore, Naver now has a total of six reaction emojis for entertainment articles: “like,” “support,” “congratulations,” “looking forward to it,” “surprised,” and “sad.” However, its non-entertainment articles still have the five original reaction emojis (“like,” “warm and fuzzy,” “sad,” “angry,” and “want a follow-up article”).

Naver explained that it had developed its new reaction emojis by analyzing users’ comment data while focusing on value-neutral and positive expression of emotion. A spokesperson for the site explained, “This improvement in the expression of empathy for entertainment news is in order to get rid of the side effects caused by the expression of negative emotions such as ‘I’m angry,’ which continued to remain after the removal of the comment feature.”
