MAMAMOO's Hwasa Reveals Meaning Behind First Solo Mini Album, Expresses Affection For Her Fans
Hwasa is back with a solo album!
On June 29, the MAMAMOO member released her first mini album “María” along with the music video for the title track.
Asked about the release of her first solo mini album since her debut, Hwasa said, “I don’t think I’ve ever worked so passionately on something before. I loved it so much to the point that it hurt. Due to that, I think this album will remain in my memory for a long time.”
Hwasa explained that her album is like a diary that contains the emotions she felt as a 26-year-old. “It’s like a crystallization of all of the sweat and tears I shed during that time,” she added.
When asked about the parts of the title track that she thought had the most impact, she answered, “Ever since I was young, I liked songs that were upbeat but sad because I thought they represented what life was like. ‘Twit’ and ‘María’ are songs like that. Personally, I really like the part before the hook of the song that says, ‘Why are you doing so much? You’re already beautiful.'” She continued, “I actually cried a lot during this part, and I felt comforted and energized. I hope that many people will gain strength from this song.”
Hwasa also elaborated on the goal she wishes to achieve through her album. “I want to repay the fans who support me with music that only I can make,” she stated.
Hwasa then spoke in more detail about the tracks which she had participated in composing, saying, “When I started composing, I thought to myself, ‘Always be true to yourself.’ I also put emphasis on my own instincts when I listened to the songs.”
Moving on to how she wants to challenge herself in the future, Hwasa commented, “I’ve been thinking a lot about where I am right now, and I’ve come to realize that I still have a long way to go. My expectations keep rising and I keep telling myself that I have to go above and beyond that every time, so there were times when I was under a lot of mental stress. Since this album is full of my darker side, I want to do more lighthearted and upbeat songs that you can listen to completely carefree.
Hwasa concluded with a heartwarming message for her fans. “It’s really been a long time. Whenever I feel tired and think that it’ll be okay to rest for a while, I think of my fans and immediately regain my senses. My fans have always given me the energy to keep going in life. I prepared for this album while imprinting the fans’ love and support on my heart. I hope that my fans will receive the sincere message I put into my album.”
