Individual Is Charged Fine For Posting Malicious Comment About Sunmi

An individual has been found guilty and fined for posting an insulting comment about Sunmi.

The Changwon District Courts found 48-year-old [by Korean reckoning] “A” guilty of insult charges and he was sentenced with a fine of 500,000 won (approximately $414.5).

“A” faced insult charges after leaving the comment, “She [Sunmi] looks like bar hostess,” on a photo of Sunmi posted on an online forum last December. Regarding the sentence, the judge explained, “The defendant insulted the victim by posting words to shame and humiliate her on a site that is open to the public. The content of the defendant’s words are vulgar and the nature of the crime was of ill intent. Also, the victim did not forgive the defendant, and the defendant did not make any efforts to recover the damages.”

Last October, Sunmi’s agency MakeUs Entertainment announced that they had taken legal action against 12 individuals who had made defamatory and malicious comments about the singer. They also stated that they would continue to file additional complaints based on evidence they were collecting.

The agency had emphasized, “Our agency will pursue legal action through civil and criminal suits without making settlements nor showing leniency, and we plan to make sure that those who cause harm in the future will also pay the full price for their actions.”
