Song Joong Ki and Kim Tae Ri's Film "Space Sweepers" Opens Up Investments To General Public Via Crowdfunding
Upcoming film “Space Sweepers,” starring Song Joong Ki and Kim Tae Ri, will be receiving investments from the general audience.
On July 21, the movie’s distributor Merry Christmas shared, “This is an easy opportunity for the public to participate in the investment of commercial blockbuster films, which was limited to existing distributors and investment agencies specializing in investment. The space science fiction film ‘Space Sweepers,’ which is drawing attention as a highly anticipated film in 2020, will start the process of receiving investments from the general public on July 22.”
Merry Christmas continued, “This investment product is a rare attempt in light of the fact that there have not been any past opportunities for the public to participate in investing in large-scale commercial films. The fact that there are now opportunities for the general public to invest in a low-risk film that is anticipated to perform well in the box office is analyzed to be a major change in the movie market.”
The distributor added, “It is expected to create a new change in the movie investment market, which has shrunk due to COVID-19. The film industry anticipates that this will give the market a boost in the current situation in which investments in new projects are not actively taking place due to the postponement of numerous films.”
Pre-registration will be available from July 22 on the crowdfunding platform Crowdy, and the public will be able to contribute an investment starting from August 10.
“Space Sweepers” is set in the year 2092 and follows the crew of a space junk collector ship called The Victory. When they discover a humanoid robot named Dorothy that’s known to be a weapon of mass destruction, they get involved in a risky business deal.
Although the movie was scheduled to premiere in summer, it was postponed due to the effects of COVID-19. It is now aiming for release sometime during Chuseok (Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving). The Chuseok holiday this year is from September 30 through October 2.
