Eric Nam Talks About His Comeback, Working With DAY6's Young K, His Podcast, And More
Eric Nam recently participated in an interview about his comeback with the EP “The Other Side.”
“The Other Side” and its title track, “Paradise,” is the singer’s first comeback since his English-language album “Before We Begin” in November 2019.
“It’s been a long time since I released a mini album and promoted in South Korea, so I’m excited,” he said. “I’m happy to be able to share diverse music with my fans. I’ve worked hard on this album for a long time, so I hope that lots of people will enjoy listening to it. I want to work hard at promoting so that I can communicate with everyone.”
Eric Nam explained the title of his album as, “Even people who look happy on the outside have things that they’re struggling with. Even when the situation is difficult, I believe that there are moments when we experience happiness. Everyone is in a difficult situation now because of COVID-19, so there are lots of people who are experiencing struggles more than happiness and joy. But if we can get past this, wouldn’t we be able to see ‘the other side’? I wanted to convey the positive message that the future will hold better things.”
About songwriting, he said, “I wanted to focus on expressing my psychological state and my emotions. When I work on music, I try to put my own stories into it. I try to express my honest emotions at the time, whether it’s suffering, happiness, gratitude, or nostalgia. I would say that I focused on ‘myself’ the most during songwriting.”
Eric Nam worked with DAY6’s Young K on writing lyrics for “The Other Side.” Young K co-wrote the songs “Trouble With You,” “Paradise,” “How You Been,” and “Love Die Young (Korean Version).”
“We happened to meet several years ago,” Eric Nam said. “I asked him to work on a song with me, and we made a good song together, but there were complications at the time that meant we couldn’t release it. I was both grateful and sorry to Young K because of that. I really wanted to work with him on this album, so I got up my courage to ask him again. He readily agreed, so I’m really grateful for that. In the end, we worked on four out of five songs together. He’s a talented person, so I had fun working with him. I’d like to take this time to thank him again.”
Eric Nam also talked about his podcast, “K-Pop Daebak w/ Eric Nam,” which he launched in 2019. “Through ‘Daebak Show,’ I introduce senior and junior K-pop artists to English-language K-pop fans. It has a positive effect on me and I enjoy doing it. I’m always having discussions with the production staff to talk about new directions. We are always casting artists who might want to appear on the show, so please contact me if that’s the case.”
