Park Bo Gum, Park So Dam, And Byun Woo Seok Share What 'Youth' Means To Them

Before the drama’s premiere on September 7, the stars of tvN’s “Record of Youth” shared their thoughts on their characters and the meaning of youth.

“Record of Youth” is a drama about young people who struggle for their dreams and their love amidst the harsh realities of the modeling industry. Park Bo Gum stars as Sa Hye Joon, an aspiring actor and model, Park So Dam stars as Ahn Jung Ha, an aspiring makeup artist, and Byun Woo Seok stars as Won Hae Hyo, a model who wants to make a name for himself without relying on his family.

Park Bo Gum said, “Hye Joon is a very rational character with independence in his values. He’s an honest and self-disciplined person, so I tried to resemble him as much as possible while filming.” He added, “To prepare for the role, I watched videos of runway shows and read pictorials and interviews. I also practiced when I could. People told me that confidence is the key. Hye Joon is an ordinary youth in his 20s who is quietly working towards his dream. I hope that my peers, who are also working toward their dreams, can relate to him.”

Park So Dam said, “Ahn Jung Ha is a cool character who has a clear goal and works hard for her dreams without rest.” To explain how she prepared for the role, she said, “When Jung Ha works at the salon, she has to wear a wireless earphone. It’s hard to hear with it on, your ear feels like it’s blocked, and it’s a bit claustrophobic. I thought about how hard it must be for staff members who work in salons.”

Byun Woo Seok said, “Won Hae Hyo is a character who can’t stand being given an advantage because of his so-called ‘golden spoon.’ He seems like someone who has no worries and should be happy, but he has a lot of inner pain and works hard. I hope that people can relate to that and support his challenges.” He added, “Even though I’ve walked the runway many times before, I was nervous when it came to filming the fashion show scene. I watched the videos of the runways I’d walked before in order to prepare.”

Asked about the meaning of youth, Park Bo Gum said, “I think that ‘youth’ is not about age, but about the mindset of starting something new.” Park So Dam said, “I think that youth is constantly taking on new challenges and growing as a person.” Byun Woo Seok quoted a poem from Samuel Ullman and said, “Like the poem that says, ‘Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind… as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty,’ I believe that youth is ‘limitless.'”

About their co-stars, Park Bo Gum said, “The laughter never stops. We have so much fun that we have to retake a few scenes. I enjoyed my time on set very much.” Park So Dam said, “It was a fun and refreshing shoot. I remember most the ‘fashion show’ scene, which took place with the help of a lot of models and staff members. I also remember it because it was the first time that Ahn Jung Ha met her idol, Sa Hye Joon. Byun Woo Seok said, “I learned a lot from Park Bo Gum and Park So Dam, who opened their hearts to me and made me feel comfortable. Even though we didn’t do anything special, the time flew by, like I was with friends. I believe that the fun atmosphere on set will translate to the screen.”

“Record of Youth” premieres on September 7 at 9 p.m. KST. Check out a teaser here!
