Byun Woo Seok Talks About His Character In "Record Of Youth," Mindset As An Actor, And More
Byun Woo Seok talked about his experience acting in tvN’s “Record of Youth” through a recent interview with Sports Seoul!
“Record of Youth” is about young people who struggle for their dreams and their love amidst the harsh realities of the modeling industry. Byun Woo Seok starred as Won Hae Hyo, a model and actor who wants to make a name for himself without relying on his family.
Similarly to his character Won Hae Hyo, Byun Woo Seok also began acting after entering the entertainment industry as a model. He shared, “Since we have many similarities, it helped me understand the character. However, emotionally, I felt more immersed in Hye Joon (played by Park Bo Gum) rather than Hae Hyo. It was on my mind a lot.”
Byun Woo Seok shared, “I tried to relate to the characters as much as I could. I’m also greedy about work, so I could relate a lot. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I should work harder and showcase even better acting. After seeing the lineup for this project, I thought, ‘It should be fine as long as I do well.'”
The actor revealed, “I learned a lot on set. I talked a lot with the director, and Shin Ae Ra, who played my character’s mother, also took good care of me like family. Seeing Park Bo Gum being considerate of others and acting well made me look up to him. I felt proud that this kind of person was my friend.”
Towards Park Bo Gum who is currently serving in the military, Byun Woo Seok commented, “There isn’t something I particularly advised him on as someone who has already served in the military. I just have the conviction that Park Bo Gum will be an even greater actor once he returns from the military.”
Byun Woo Seok revealed, “I had a lot of expectations for this project, and since it’s a project I did my best on, I’m very grateful to a lot of people. The moments when everyone helped out when I had difficulty portraying Hae Hyo’s emotions remain as happy memories.” He continued, “Since it was a pre-produced drama, I also watched from the perspective of a viewer, and it was very therapeutic. My family showed me a lot of support in our family group chat. The amount of followers on my social media account also increased noticeably.”
Currently, Byun Woo Seok is already preparing for his next project “SoulMate” (working title) with Kim Da Mi and Jeon So Nee. He shared, “I’m greatly anticipating it because I think I’ll be able to show a different side of me than from ‘Record of Youth.’ I think these aspects are the perks of being an actor. In the future, I also want to try acting as a psychopath or a rough villain. This year, I turned 30 [in Korean reckoning], and my mindset has definitely changed. I want to do better, and my sense of responsibility is greater.”
Finally, Byun Woo Seok shared, “Through this project, I felt that youth was about continuously trying, failing, and overcoming things regardless of age. After my 30s and even in my 40s and 50s, I want to live on as a youthful person who continues to take on challenges.”
