Nam Joo Hyuk And Han Ji Min Share Thoughts On Reuniting For New Movie "Josée," Hardest Part Of Filming, And More
Nam Joo Hyuk and Han Ji Min talked about their experience working on the upcoming film “Josée”!
On November 17, the actors and director of “Josée” attended an online press conference to share their thoughts on the new movie.
A remake of the Japanese film “Josee, the Tiger and the Fish,” which is based on the novel of the same name, “Josée” will tell the story of a woman and a man who embark on the most beautiful chapter of their lives after meeting one another. Han Ji Min will star as Josée, and her “Radiant” co-star Nam Joo Hyuk will join her as Young Suk.
Han Ji Min spoke about her feelings on returning to the big screen for the first time in two years since her 2018 film “Miss Baek.” She said, “I feel nervous and excited thinking about greeting viewers with a film for the first time in a while. Taking part in this online press conference feels a bit unfamiliar, and I do miss the old days.”
Nam Joo Hyuk commented, “Viewers will be seeing a new and different version of me through this film. That’s why I feel even more nervous, and I’m looking forward to it as well.”
Director Kim Jong Gwan talked about the pressure of taking on a remake. “I felt a heavy sense of burden because the original film and novel are so good,” he said. “Despite that, the reason why I wanted to do this film is because I loved the original novel and film’s perspective on people and its deep sense of humanity.”
He continued, “I wanted to express those aspects in our own different ways. There’s no meaning in keeping the original stories the same—we preserved the original message, but we also thought long and hard about how to make our own ‘Josée.'”
The director expressed his hopes that the film will become something like a fond memory. “I wanted to create a memory for the viewers that will help them understand others more deeply,” he said.
On casting for the film, Kim Jong Gwan explained, “Although the film is a remake, its feeling changes depending on which actors are cast. I hoped that we’d be able to portray a new version of Josée and Young Suk by casting Han Ji Min and Nam Joo Hyuk.”
Han Ji Min shared that she felt pressured as well. “Rather than deciding to perform in a different way than the original actors had, I worked hard and thought about it a lot in order to express our own version of Josée within our scenario.”
She went on to talk about preparing to play her character, who is disabled. She shared, “I kept a wheelchair in my home and tried to get used to it in my daily life.”
Han Ji Min continued, “I personally wish that this film won’t become a love story based on a disability. I tried to portray the love between Josée and Young Suk entirely through emotions.”
The actress discussed reuniting with Nam Joo Hyuk for the upcoming film. “It was nice that I was able to shorten the process of getting to know what kind of actor Nam Joo Hyuk is through our second project together,” Han Ji Min said. “Because we acted comfortably, I was once again able to depend on him a lot and film while receiving the vibes Young Suk gives off. I was thankful for that.”
Nam Joo Hyuk expressed his gratitude toward his co-star as well. “She told me everything about Josée even when I just looked in her eyes,” he said. “I was able to learn and grow again.”
To conclude, Han Ji Min talked about how the hardest part of working on the film was portraying its wide range of emotions. “When someone loves, there’s excitement, nervousness, fear, and hesitation,” she said. “There’s also a feeling of anxiety about the future. ‘Josée’ is a film that contains all those various emotions.” She went on to explain that every little detail matters in portraying these emotions. “It was hard, but I had fun filming,” she said.
Nam Joo Hyuk agreed, “It wouldn’t make sense for me to say that it wasn’t difficult. I just tried to act comfortably and communicate with the director a lot. He was my greatest source of strength that allowed me to be comfortable.”
“Josée” premieres on December 10.
