"True Beauty" Star Hwang In Yeop Talks About Chemistry With Moon Ga Young And Cha Eun Woo, How He Resembles His Character, And More
Ahead of the premiere of tvN’s “True Beauty,” Hwang In Yeop dished on his character and his experience filming the drama!
Based on the hit webtoon of the same name, “True Beauty” is a romantic comedy about a girl named Lim Ju Gyeong (played by Moon Ga Young), who zealously uses makeup to hide her bare face and combat her insecurities about her looks. ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo will star in the drama as Lee Su Ho, a popular student with his own emotional wounds, while Hwang In Yeop will play Han Seo Jun, an untamable rebel with a surprisingly warm heart.
“True Beauty” marks Hwang In Yeop’s very first time playing a leading role, and the actor couldn’t contain his excitement as he spoke about the drama.
“A year ago, I first saw in an article that ‘True Beauty’ would be adapted into a drama, and I thought to myself, ‘How great would it be if I could be in this drama?'” he recalled. “Thankfully, the opportunity to audition came my way, and I ended up actually being able to play the cool character of Han Seo Jun. I’m extremely delighted, and it feels like a dream.”
“I’m acting happily,” he went on. “As many people are looking forward to the drama with love and interest, I’m working hard to do my very best and show good things.”
Describing his character, Hwang In Yeop remarked, “Seo Jun is very stylish, and he looks rough and rebellious on the outside, but he’s actually a very warm-hearted and considerate guy. He’s a character that you just can’t hate, and he shows new and diverse charms depending on whom he’s interacting with.”
When asked whether his real-life personality resembled that of Han Seo Jun, the actor replied, “I think my level of synchronization with Han Seo Jun is 50 percent. We’re similar in the way that I, like Seo Jun, have a cold and sharp image that makes me seem hard to approach, but I’m actually the complete opposite. I laugh a lot, and I joke around a lot, and I’m the type who likes to talk to other people. I also have a lot of interest in fashion in real life.”
As for how he prepared for the role, Hwang In Yeop shared, “He’s such a visually striking character that from head to toe, I worried a lot about ‘What can I do to make myself Seo Jun-esque?’ I’m currently working together with the stylist team to try different things and figure out what will make me look more like Han Seo Jun while also suiting me personally.”
He continued, “Visual elements aside, I’m also talking to the director a lot and working hard to try to portray Seo Jun’s emotions well through my acting.”
That’s not all that Hwang In Yeop’s done to prepare for the drama, however. The actor went on to reveal, “Because I wanted to coolly portray Seo Jun, I got a motorcycle license in real life, and I also took action classes. I hope that you’ll keep an eye on Seo Jun’s first entrance [in the drama], which allows you to see all of these efforts pay off in one go.”
Hwang In Yeop also expressed complete confidence in his chemistry with co-stars Moon Ga Young and Cha Eun Woo.
“Since I’m a rookie actor, Ga Young and Eun Woo are very considerate and have been taking good care of me,” he said. “That’s why I was able to become close with the two of them very quickly, and I’m really having fun acting together with them.”
“Because we’ve all become very close, we tease each other almost every day,” revealed the actor. “I think that this kind of real-life chemistry will shine through in the drama as well. I hope that you’ll pay attention to the chemistry between the three of us.”
When asked about his goals as an actor, Hwang In Yeop shared, “I’d like to become ‘an actor that people continuously look forward to.’ I don’t think there’s any phrase that could make me happier than that.”
Finally, he concluded, “In light of how much viewers are looking forward to and waiting for ‘True Beauty,’ I’m doing my very best and working hard during filming. I hope that you’ll tune in to the first episode on December 9 no matter what. Thank you!”
“True Beauty” premieres on December 9 at 10:30 p.m. KST and will be available with English subtitles on Viki.
