aespa Shares Meanings Behind Their Stage Names, Variety Shows They Want To Appear On, And More

On December 7, “Kim Shin Young’s Hope Song At Noon” had SM’s rookie girl group aespa as their latest guest!

The girls took turns introducing themselves and then explained the meanings behind their stage names. Winter began, “I was born on January 1, in the winter. At our agency, I had a very pure image. That’s how my stage name became Winter.” Ningning explained, “I have another birth name. When I was younger, ‘Ningning’ was my nickname, so I’m using that.”

Giselle commented, “When I was a trainee, I wore headbands often. Our trainer said that I looked like a little British girl. That’s how I came to use an elegant name like ‘Giselle.'” Lastly, Karina said, “My baptismal name is ‘Katarina,’ so I became ‘Karina.’ Other options included ‘Woo Ah’ and ‘Jasmine.'”

DJ Kim Shin Young then asked Ningning which celebrities outside of SM Entertainment she wants to meet most. She answered, “I’ll say one female senior artist and one male senior artist. I like Beyonce and I want to meet Jay Park.” Ningning also sent Jay Park a short video message, commenting, “I can copy your songs and dances. I’ll continue practicing a lot. If we meet, I’ll show you [my singing and dancing].”

Karina picked which variety show she thinks she would do well on. She said, “I want to go on ‘Home Alone‘ (‘I Live Alone’).” She made everyone laugh by adding. “However, I live in a dorm right now.” Winter chose the show “Begin Again.”

Afterwards, Giselle was asked which commercial she wanted to film most with her members, and she picked a commercial for drinks. When asked to act out how she would film one, she made everyone laugh by pretending to drink alcohol rather than a soft drink.

At the end of the group’s appearance, Ningning shared, “I think I’m going to cry. Although the radio show is already over, I hope to meet everyone often. Be careful not to catch a cold. It’s good if you drink lots of hot soup. Have lots of gamjatang (pork backbone stew). Please give aespa lots of love.”

SM’s four-member rookie girl group aespa made their debut on November 17 with the single “Black Mamba.”
