“Awaken” is a mystery drama about a series of cases in the present day that are connected to a mysterious incident that took place in a village 28 years ago. Yoon Sun Woo plays Moon Jae Woong, who is revealed to be one of the three survivors of the illegal human experiments that were carried out in that village. The other survivors were Do Jung Woo (Namgoong Min) and Jamie Layton (Lee Chung Ah). Moon Jae Woong is also the true culprit behind the serial killing case and carries deep resentment against the other survivors.
This is Yoon Sun Woo’s second time working with Namgoong Min. The two played brothers in the hit SBS drama “Stove League” last year. Yoon Sun Woo said, “He takes such good care of me that it feels like he’s my older brother in real life. As an actor, he helps me out a lot. He helped me become aware of little details like pronunciation and vocalization, so I could think about a lot of things while I was acting.”
Yoon Sun Woo’s “Awaken” character, Moon Jae Woong, initially appeared in the drama as a social outcast engineer with obsessive-compulsive disorder who spends all his time on the Internet. The actor said, “I think the director saw my character, Baek Young Soo, in ‘Stove League.’ There are similar aspects to their introversion.”
He continued, “My character was a truly evil villain who committed murders. Rather than trying to look evil, I tried to get close psychologically to the character. He would explode in anger toward those who handled his things, and he felt absolutely no sense of guilt when he acted. I wanted to show a villain who enjoyed murder as if it was a game.”
