Kim Young Dae Talks About His Rising Popularity + His Work On 'The Penthouse' And 'Cheat On Me If You Can'

After the end of “Cheat on Me If You Can,” actor Kim Young Dae sat down for a series of interviews to talk about the show, as well as his role in “The Penthouse,” his rising popularity, and more.

In an interview with OSEN, he said, “I think that this is the stage where I have to work even harder. I can’t really tell if I’m popular or not. Maybe it’s because we can’t go out during COVID-19, but I don’t really feel a difference. If I had to pick something, I’d say that my family members have gotten more requests for my signature than before. I’m still trying to figure out what my appeal is. I am discovering new sides of myself as I act. I think that the reason I’m getting attention from the public is because I’ve played great characters. I hope that viewers can see the effort I put into expressing and analyzing my characters to the best of my ability.”

In an interview with Newsis, he talked about working with Jo Yeo Jeong and Go Joon in “Cheat on Me If You Can.” “I was able to mature as an actor by working with them,” he said. “Even when we were doing a back-and-forth, they would encourage me with natural reactions. I felt stable with their lead to follow. They’re also great at creating a good atmosphere, so I couldn’t help but like working with them. They took care of me a lot on set and gave me a lot of advice on how to create a good scene. I learned a lot about acting from them. How to follow the flow, how to understand a scene, the emotions of a character, and more.”

In Star News, he talked about the difficulties of playing a school bully in “The Penthouse.” “It was a little hard psychologically, but I tried to immerse myself in the acting,” he said. “I had to think of these evil acts as part of who Joo Suk Hoon was. These acts formed part of the foundation of who he was, so there was a bit of psychological pain involved in immersing myself into that.” He added, “I think he will become more independent in Season 2. After meeting Bae Ro Na, he learned how to tell good and bad apart, and is becoming more independent in his conflict with his father. I think he will act more independently in love and also in the case of his mother’s death.”

In Xportsnews, Kim Young Dae shared that he had left Fudan University, a prestigious university in China, in order to pursue a career in acting. “I came back to Korea for summer vacation and happened to meet the head of my current agency,” he said. “I started acting after he persuaded me, but I actually had a lot of conflicting emotions. Curiosity and doubts about what he saw in me, and also a sense of taking on a new challenge. I hadn’t been taught acting through formal lessons, so it wasn’t easy. Of course, it was shocking from my parents’ perspective to have their son suddenly say he wanted to be an actor, and they opposed it at first. That’s why I tried to hide how difficult it was at first. But now they’re cheering me on and are curious about my work. I still have a long way to go, but I’m proud just of having changed my parents’ minds.”
