“SNL Korea” is making a return.

A Korean version of the live sketch show “Saturday Night Live” aired nine seasons on tvN from 2011 until it came to an end in 2018. On February 17, it was announced that the production company ASTORY has signed a contract with NBCUniversal Formats, which holds the rights to the popular format, and they’ll be bringing the show back to Korea with a new twist.

Ahn Sang Hwi returns to the show as principal producer, while producing directors Yoo Seong Moh and Kwon Seong Wook join ASTORY and take part as key staff members.

Shin Dong Yup was the MC of “SNL Korea” during its previous run, and it’s planned that he’ll be reprising his role as the main MC. The cast will include familiar faces as well as new members.

Variety reports that NBCUniversal Formats’ senior vice president of format sales and production Ana Langenberg stated, “The iconic brand has proven to be a huge success across the region and has garnered such a strong following over the years. So, the bar has already been set! We look forward to our new partners ASTORY and the original creative team putting a fresh spin on the show and can’t wait to see how audiences respond when it returns.”

ASTORY CEO Lee Sang Baek said, “We’re also extremely excited to relaunch SNL with an ASTORY twist! We’ll be bringing the best Korean comedic talent to TV screens and viewers can expect new parodies, new characters and lots of fresh humor. This will be a variety comedy show like you’ve never seen before.”

“SNL Korea” will return in the second half of the year, and the exact schedule and its platform will be announced later on.
