2020 Dramas Starring Former "Produce 101" Contestants
“Produce 101” has welcomed many talented artists, both trainees and idols, on their stages. Every season, we got to learn about contestants’ talents in terms of singing, dancing, and rapping. But another talent that had yet to be seen on TV for some participants was their acting skills.
While some of these contestants had already kickstarted their acting careers, others debuted following their participation in the survival show. Here are some 2020 dramas featuring former “Produce 101” contestants.
Warning: minor spoilers for the dramas ahead.
1. “More Than Friends” – Ong Seong Wu
Ong Seong Wu stars in this drama as Lee Soo, a photographer who has had a decade-old crush for his calligrapher friend Kyung Woo Yeon, played by Shin Ye Eun. This crush chase lasts for a very long time due to a previous misunderstanding. However, neither one of them can keep their crush a secret anymore, and the drama explores whether the pair will finally confess to one another or not.
Ong Seong Wu will make you both appreciate his acting and instantly fall for his charm in this drama. Watching him convey his emotions in every scene he shared with Shin Ye Eun was enough to make my heart swoon with every line. You can tell he mastered his role well from the way he confidently portrays his character.

2. “Love Revolution” – Park Ji Hoon
“Love Revolution” stars Park Ji Hoon as a 17-year-old high school student who falls in love at first sight with fellow student Wang Ja Rim (played by Lee Ruby). Knowing his love interest is difficult to impress, he does everything in his power to get her attention.
Upon reading that Park Ji Hoon worried about doing his character justice, I was surprised because he definitely delivered. His persona seems to have a few things in common with the character he plays, making it another reason why it’s enjoyable to watch him bring this role to life.

3. “Do You Like Brahms?” – Lee Yoo Jin
“Do You Like Brahms?” stars Kim Min Jae, Park Eun Bin, Park Ji Hyun, Kim Sung Cheol, and Lee Yoo Jin as Park Joon Young, Chae Song Ah, Lee Jung Kyung, Hahn Hyun Ho, and Yoon Dong Yoon, respectively. The drama focuses on classical music students who are in pursuit of love, happiness, opportunities, and dreams.
There seems to be more dramas tackling friendship nowadays, which is why Lee Yoo Jin’s portrayal of Yoon Dong Yoon remains dear to my heart. It’s heartwarming to watch him encapsulate the depiction of a loyal and protective friend to Chae Song Ah, and it was nice seeing him in some romance scenes as well!

4. “How to Buy a Friend” – Kim So Hye
This drama tells the story of a group of students who all find themselves linked somehow to the death of a former classmate. Lee Shin Young, Shin Seung Ho, and Kim So Hye play the characters of Park Chan Hong, Heo Don Hyuk, and Uhm Se Yoon, respectively. The drama deals with heavy topics such as bullying and suicide.
Kim So Hye plays the love interest of the male lead Park Chan Hong. Her character starts out shy and scared, but over the course of the drama, she opens up to Chan Hong and becomes more honest and trusting towards him. The raw and real way in which Kim So Hye plays her character says a lot about the actress’s ability to smoothly transition from one state to another, which makes this drama a fun watch.

5. “Single & Ready to Mingle” – Weki Meki’s Kim Doyeon and Choi Yoojung
Kim Doyeon and Choi Yoojung are the stars of this romcom web drama, where they play two best friends, Ji Yeon Seo and Bong Joo Yi. This inseparable pair has been through all walks of life up until they become adults. However, they are lacking in one specific area: love and dating. The two make a decision to fix this one hurdle in their seemingly perfect life, but things don’t go exactly as planned.
I’m always curious about idols’ synergy in a drama, especially when they’re from the same group. Needless to say, watching Kim Doyeon and Choi Yoojung playing besties answered all of my questions. Their natural chemistry is admirable and is surely due to them already being close in real life, but it’s their quirkiness, which starts from the first episode, that will convince you to binge-watch the rest!

6. “Live On” – NU’EST’s Minhyun
Baek Ho Rang (played by Jung Da Bin) is your typical popular high school student. Being a social media star, her reputation is suddenly threatened one day when a mysterious character makes his presence online and seems to know her darkest secrets. In order to uncover this mystery, she reaches out to Go Eun Taek (played by Hwang Min Hyun), a wise and meticulous student who is the head of the school’s broadcasting club. This new alliance sends the pair on a quest that may eventually lead to something more than saving untold secrets.
Minhyun’s tsundere vibes in the drama will definitely get you hooked, especially because watching characters soften later is one of the best parts of any visual work. Plus, you can tell he shares similarities between his real self and his character, which is a plus that made his role all the more interesting.

7. “Twenty-Twenty” – UP10TION’s Kim Woo Seok
“Twenty-Twenty” is about young adults in their twenties who are going after their dreams as they embark the journey of adulthood. The star-studded cast features Han Sung Min, UP10TION’s Kim Woo Seok, Park Sang Nam, A.C.E.’s Chan, Chae Won Bin, and Jin Ho Eun.
First acting experiences always catch my attention, especially when it involves idols. Kim Woo Seok impressed with his acting as a 20-something character for a rookie actor. You can tell that he carries out his role comfortably as Lee Hyun Jin. Plus, playing a secluded young adult is definitely a relatable role that would intrigue viewers.
