"Minari" Earns 6 Nominations For 93rd Academy Awards, With Cast Members Making Oscars History
“Minari” and its team are up for six Oscars!
The hit film “Minari” is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Steven Yeun, Han Ye Ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh Jung, and Will Patton. Based on the director’s real-life experiences, the movie is about a family of South Korean immigrants who try to start a new life in rural America during the 1980s.
The nominees for this year’s Academy Awards were announced on March 15, with the list including “Minari” for Best Picture, Steven Yeun for Best Actor, Youn Yuh Jung for Best Supporting Actress, Lee Isaac Chung for Best Director, Lee Isaac Chung for Best Original Screenplay, and Emile Mosseri for Best Original Score.
Steven Yeun is the first Asian-American actor to be nominated for the Best Actor title from the Academy Awards, while Youn Yuh Jung is the first Korean person to be nominated in an acting category at the Oscars!
“Minari” has already won for Best Motion Picture in a Foreign Language at the 78th Golden Globes and took home a Grand Jury Prize and an Audience Award at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The movie and star Alan Kim also both scored wins at the 26th Critics Choice Awards. So far, the film and its team have won a whopping 91 trophies from award ceremonies and associations.

The films competing for the Best Picture title at the 93rd Academy Awards along with “Minari” are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
The Directing category also includes nominees Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”), David Fincher (“Mank”), Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”), and Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”).
Along with Steven Yeun, nominees in the Best Actor category are Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), and Gary Oldman (“Mank”).
For the Best Supporting Actress title, Youn Yuh Jung is up against Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), and Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”).
The Best Original Screenplay nominees also include “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
Along with Emile Mosseri for “Minari,” the Best Original Score nominees are “Da 5 Bloods” (Terence Blanchard), “Mank” (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross), “News of the World” (James Newton Howard), and “Soul” (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste).
The 93rd Academy Awards will be held on April 25.
