Last year, at the 92nd Academy Awards, Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” made history with four wins, including Original Screenplay, International Feature Film, Directing, and most notably, Best Picture.
For this year’s Academy Awards, “Minari,” which is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Steven Yeun, Han Ye Ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh Jung, and Will Patton, earned six nominations. Based on the director’s real-life experiences, the movie is about a family of South Korean immigrants who try to start a new life in rural America during the 1980s.
“Minari” has been nominated for Best Picture, Steven Yeun for Best Actor, Youn Yuh Jung for Best Supporting Actress, Lee Isaac Chung for Best Director, Lee Isaac Chung for Best Original Screenplay, and Emile Mosseri for Best Original Score. Steven Yeun is the first Asian-American actor to be nominated for the Best Actor title at the Academy Awards, while Youn Yuh Jung is the first Korean actor to be nominated in an acting category at the Oscars. There is a possibility that director Bong Joon Ho will meet with the “Minari” team at the award ceremony.
The 93rd Academy Awards will be held on April 25 in Los Angeles, United States.
