AKMU's Lee Suhyun Talks About Overcoming A Slump With IU's Help
On the April 19 episode of JTBC’s “Nice Alone,” AKMU’s Lee Suhyun talked about how she had overcome a slump in her life.
Lee Suhyun shared that she had suffered from insomnia and said, “I don’t find anything fun these days. Rather than ‘I want to play,’ I often think, ‘I want to rest.’ But I couldn’t just rest all the time. When I think about the times that I slept the best, it’s when I had something to look forward to the next day. But now I don’t have anything like that. I just look for the times when I can take a break. When my brother [Lee Chanhyuk] shows me new music, I don’t really react. I’ll say something like, ‘It’s good. But I think it would suit another artist better.'”
She went on, “For about a year, there was nothing that I really wanted to do. I sought out a lot of senior artists for help, and IU told me that she had gone through a slump at my age. That’s what gave me hope to overcome this. Even just a year ago, I thought about the word ‘retirement.'”
Lee Suhyun shared how she had gotten help from another senior artist. “When I told Yoo Hee Yeol that I didn’t find music fun anymore, he had the saddest expression as he asked, ‘Really?’ He told me, ‘As your senior, I find great happiness in seeing juniors like you. If you were to stop doing music, I think I’d be very sad.’ I felt like I was worth something if a musician Yoo Hee Yeol felt so much regret at the thought that I might retire.”
At the studio, Lee Suhyun said positively, “I’ve gotten out of the worst of the slump now. As I started living on my own, I started making my own life, and started to differentiate work and the rest of my life.”
